Music and cars - I love the classics. I guess that makes me "out of touch."

The thing about the Beatles is that they were great songwriters. They wrote better songs for 1 album than many other artists did in their whole career.

See I think that's a matter of opinion. In my opinion Sarah Bettens, Anouk, Megan McCauley, and a few others are better songwriters. But that's my taste. I simply don't understand the fascination with the Beatles, as if they were the best artists ever, and should be considered so to everyone.

I even got accused of being racist for my views. One person I know said if I were to modify a classic I should donk it (donks are the cars that sit up really high and have those giant rims and fan-belt tires). I told him "look if I'm going to modify a car I'll do real mods to it instead of gangster-izing it."

I guess the racing fan comes out of me with that. Around here, since most of the cars that are customized like this are mid 80s rear wheel drive cars,when I see one any my first thought is

"Damn.. That car could've had a better life as a hobby stock"

("Hobby stocks" mostly mid 80s rear wheel drive cars)



Quite a few years ago, I manage to offend someone I worked with when they asked my if I was going to "Lower" my new pick up truck, i told them if I wanted something low to the the ground i would've bought a Corvette, or Camaro.

As far as modern music, I pretty much gave up on new music when I was a DJ at a college radio station.. That was when I discovered that about 90% of "New" music was crap. Every once in a while, I'll find an new artist I really like (for me Ingrid Michaelson is the latest) but for the most part I listen to 70s and 80s.

I never saw the point in that either. All it did, was screw up the car's handling, cause the speedometer to misread, and throw off the gearing. But hey, as long as it looks cool

my musical tastes run from 30 - 40's bigh band music (Glenn Miller, the Dorssey Bro's, Benny Goodman) to a lot of the 50's rock, (forget the bubble gum stuff from the late 50's early 60's too mellow and homogonized and corporate) to all of the rock from the 60's to the early 90's. after the 90's the music just seemed to be (really) all the same esp with the likes of Madonna and such. there are a few bands from the 90's and 00 that I like but those are few.

Never got into the rap/hip-hop stuff or country. never appealed to me. from my point of view most the the last 20 years of music just sounded the same over and over again corporate music IMHO also way too many boy bands

give me a late 50's or 60's model car (something like the T-bird(before 1963 when they made it a humungo car) or Corvette or Mustang or Firebird) with a big honkin V-8 engine. GIVE me a 69 Mustang Cobra candy apple red metal flake high gloss paint job convertable with at least a 351 Winsor engine and a 4 on the floor (and an unlimted budget so I can buy gas and the lead additive) and I will be a happy man.

My taste in music is all over the place. I like some things in every genre. I have even found some good stuff in rap, before it became about the bitches, hoes, and money, when it was about hard life on the streets and was actually poetry put to an urban sound. Tupac anyone?

As for my classic car of choice, a '67 Chevy Impala. *drooooool*

My CD collection runs the gamut, including artists like Louis Armstrong, Ella Fitzgerald, George Gershwin, Chuck Berry, Buddy Holly, Petula Clark, Led Zeppelin, Heart, KISS, Alice Cooper, Tempations, Bill Withers, Stevie Wonder, U2, INXS, The Police, Bruce Springsteen, etc. All over the place.

I know little about cars, but I love the classic stylings of pre-1965 cars. The other day, I nearly cried when I saw what someone did to a 1957 Chevy Bel Air. They'd painted it an ugly greenish color, boosted it up on neon orange struts and put tiny, tiny wheels on it! The Bel Air is a gorgeous classic car, and they tortured the poor thing! Why mess with perfection?!

most of my CD collection is more contemporary rock. NOW if you wanna talk about my record collection (as in 12 inch need a record player with a needle type) some of it is 70's rock that I purchased myself, but most is the collection I inherited from my parents and aunt. that consists of the big band stuff like I mentioned above along with some ecceltic stuff like Don Ho and Mitch Miller some comedy stuff like How To Be A Jewish Mother/Gertrude Berg. most of that will NEVER be published on to CD (or whatever comes next) so I am digitizing it myself (slowly but surely).

calling me a hipster is like calling a moose a duck. the music I like is what I like because I like it. I am not an elitist or nor a snob. there are ceertain type os music I like and some I don't. the big band musc was what I grew up with ie. my parents were from the big band/swing era and listened to it when I was younger. I slowly began to notice the 50's and 60's rock and roll/blues when I got a bit older. and so on. like most people there are "styles" or a "sound" that appeal to me and others that do not.

one has to remember that over the last 120 years that "commerical music" has been available to the masses there have been periods of what I call corporate or commercialized music. this has happened in every decade since wax platters or tubes have been sold in the mass market.

these periods IMO are periods where everything is a "Me TOO". one group or company puts out a new "sound" or introduces a new genre, or brings to the forefront a new band or group with a different sound. that ne w"thing" proves to be a success. NOW all the companies want to get on the gravy train and sell records/CDs and make lots of money cashing in on the new "trend". when this happens most (not all though) music that gets resleased tends to sound similiar if not alike.

This continues until the next big "shift" or trend comes along.

in my life there have been many many shifts such as the White people's Blues (a lot of the 50's rock and roll by white artists making the blues "palitable" for white audences), the British Invasion 1 - 2 and 3, "acid" rock, disco, Glam Rock, punk, hip-hop/rap and its variations, heavy metal in several different variations (death metal, speed metal, etc.), grunge, boy bands/groups, girl bands/groups (in several different eras), and several others that I can not think of or name.

once the "newness" wears off the companies still try and "squeeze" every last penny out of a particualr trend or sound until they do it to death and just turn out utter crap.

the only reason I am digitizing some of my record collection is for one very important reason. Most if not all will NEVER be re-released on CD or ditigitzed. I have albums that will never EVER see the light of day again. there are no master tapes to go back and resurect for CD. I want to preserve what I have so I can past it on to someone else.

In my opinion modern country music isn't country music in the classic sense but rather sounds like classic rock.
