  • Could someone help me make a survey?

I'm kind of curious about why Twilight causes such passionate hatred/love in people. So I'm trying to figure out what it is about it. I'm pretty sure the hatedom comes from how many people love it. And I think the attraction comes from the appeal of an outsider (not unlike why someone would be attracted to James Dean* movies)

I'm trying to put together a survey to try to figure it out, but I want to make it so the questions don't sound judgemental. Can anyone help?

Well, my little cousin loves the stories because 1: It was the first /young adult/ novel she read, and 2: She wants to be in love like Bella.

Don't get her problem. She's going to break alot of hearts. She's very beautiful, highly intelligent, and incredibly kind. (She claims she got how she treat others from me...)

Others hate it because they love to hate things that are popular.

Others hate it because vampires have had set limits, and Twilight did a complete reimagination of them.

Others hate it because the writing sucks. (I thought it was ok).

Maybe best questions to avoid was, Who is hotter, team Edward and team Jacob.

Maybe better questions would be like, Did the changing of standard and popular lore of vampire and werewolf is a good thing? Such as letting others get out of their shell and seeing new things, rather then just go NO! WRONG! IT MUST BE THIS! Standards must be met!

    I'll shut up.

A good question would be what first got them into Twilight. Was it because of the movies, because someone recommended it, it's their genre, or they just stumbled across it one day?

What appealed to them most? The love triangle, the romeo and juliet plot, or the attraction of supernatural creatures? Also works for what turned them off Twilight.

Which character do they most relate to? And why?

How do they feel about the representation of the supernatural creatures (vampires and werewolves*)?

Do they know about the traditional way they are represented in popular fiction/media?

Do they measure up their boyfriends to edward and/or jacob? (i just don't know any male fans)

What was your favourite book/movie prior to Twilight? (interesting to know or if they even remember)

What is the main thing they took away from the stories? (the outsider, young love, be yourself, etc?)

*are they werewolves or just wolves who happen to be people some of the time? Coz I think the Twi-hards get angry if you don't get that right.

--> I'm just gonna put it out there. I hate Twilight, but I've never read the books beyond the first page (and never plan to). I really just hate the culture surrounding it, and the mass hysteria it induces. And Meyer's writing style left me annoyed.
That and.....@#$&#^$@!!!!!!!! Vampires don't sparkle in the sun!!!! (Yes, I am one of those people Plaidman described)

Why would you think that? Just because of all those years he spent selling his sausage on television?

Hmmm I'm not good at thinking up questions but I can say why I like it ....I'm actually not that into the movies, I like the books better, they have way more detail and are well written. I like the way they blew out old stereotypes of vampires and made them completely unique and cool. When this came out it was a really original idea.

One thing you could do is maybe tie it in with True Blood...another favorite of mine. Those are books I haven't read yet...

I tried to read one of the books and I couldn't get far. I found the writing to just be bad. I didn't even get far enough to get to the real story, the writing just turned me off so much. I'm no lit snob, I love Stephan King, but Twilight just felt like it had all the flair of a microwave manual.

The writing is terrible, and the books promote abusive relationships. I could say more, but Arzim's essay here has put down the reasons why I dislike the books in far less rambling and more organised way.

I'm not bothered about people reading the books as long as they're not going all, "OMG this is the best book series evar!1!eleventy!" It's trash, like Mills&Boon. As long as people admit that, then fine. I just don't think that young teens should read it and think that if their boyf abuses them, then it's somehow ok if he "loves" them.

Hm, why do people hate Twilight. Probably because it's fans, pardon my language, will not shut the fuck up about it. Every other facebook bumper sticker is Twilight. I feel like I can't go through my news feed without reading at least one mention of Twilight. We have not just kids, not just teens, but adults who won't shut up about how they'll never find some guy as great as Edward.

I think I just fell a little in love with you.

I always saw vampires as a metaphor of incredible lust and dangerous sexual desires. They had everything to do with sex and the dangers associated (dying in childbirth, AIDS - in later movies, the fact that premarital sex was seen as a sin).
                  They are not boyfriend material.

I don't go for this whole 'make old things into something cool' BS.

A vampire is a specific mythological being with specific minimum traits including strengths and weaknesses. If you throw all that out and substitute something else (which, in Twilight's case, is a steaming, smelly pile of 1337ZORZOMGKEWL with no substance) than what you have is no longer a vampire, but rather, something else entirely. Feel free to write whatever you want about this something else, but hijacking a name that doesn't fit you're invention in any but the most intangible way.

I'd be happy to discuss whether or not Twilight is any good in another thread, but could we work on making a survey instead of discussing the book? I'll make the Twilight thread if you want...

I kinda figured that was what I was doing.

Q 10) Are these creatures: A) Vampires B) Fairies C) Gremlins or D) None of the Above?

Q 11) Do you believe that the world was established with subtlety, restraint, or creativity?
                          A) Yes B) NO

It's not that I hate Twilight, it's that it's not my cup of tea.

The books are written for a different demographic than I am in.

While I know that as a work of fiction, the author can do whatever she wants to do, it does bug me that she admits to having done no research on the subject of Vampires and made up whatever she wanted.

Again this is her right so to do as it is the right of the readers to enjoy that...but it goes against everything I consider "normal" about vampires of the various cultures across the world.

So I'm not a hater of it. Far from it. It got my daughter to read and avidly at that. Thanks to that interest, I was able to steer her to other books of a similar genre and she is reading them as well.

I just do not have any interest in reading them or seeing any more of the movies. I saw Twilight...it wasn't bad...but it just didn't grip me.

                              Harsh.

Surveys are suppose to have neutral answers. There are no right or wrong answers. Everyone has an opinion. Why you think theirs sucks, it makes their's no less valid.

Seriously. What is with this raving hatred of people daring to have intrests that are different from others? It's everywhere.

Look at this way: At least people are READING, as compared to decade or two ago, where most kids in school (The ones I attended) HATING it with a passion. I hated it when we had to do group reading, because the students would read so.... slow.... as they puzzled on how to read every fucking word.

It's not that hard! Read a book! Instead of flexing your fucking muscle, and beating up people because their shoes aren't expensive.

On the other hand, with the internet, people are reading more then ever at least.
