  • Movies you think are overrated.

Any popular movies (either by fans or critics) that you just don't get the hype over?

For me, it's No Country For Old Men. I wouldn't call it a bad movie, but I just don't get what's so brilliant about it. Is it the acting, the suspense, or just some hidden meaning that only a select few understand? IMO, it was nothing more than a minimalist chase movie but with the most anticlimatic ending ever. Good idea, but I've seen it better executed in other movies (and TV shows).

While I don't dislike them, sometimes I wonder what was so special about a lot of older movies. Like the REALLY old movies. And reviews are like "Clark Gable's RIVETING performance had me on the edge of my seat!" but when I see it, I see a bunch of people who sound like they're reading off queue cards. Was great acting back then your ability to say your lines in monotone? to look as disinterested and lame as possible?

My husband HATED No Country For Old Men, and I LOVED it.

It's a very polarizing movie. It doesn't follow a traditional story arc, and (SPOILER ALERT)....the off screen murder of the protagonist felt like a slap in the face for many viewers. Personally, I think it added a new level of creepiness to the villain.

That's the Cohen Brothers for you. People either love 'em or hate 'em. (I love them, and I loved No Country for Old Men.) I know a lot of people who liked the movie didn't like the ending, but I did. (I also love everything by Quentin Tarantino, another polarizing screenwriter/director.)

As far as movies that I think are overrated - anything by James Cameron. Titanic, Avatar, whatever.

Titanic was massively overrated. And there was too much hype surrounding Avatar, as well, though I enjoyed the movie quite a bit.

Pearl Harbor is another that I thought was overhyped.

I was going to post that one, but you beat me to it. I don't think it was a bad movie, but I don't think it was anywhere near what it was hyped up to be. And no, I didn't let my wife or anyone else drag me to the theater to see it, but she had it on the TV a few times.

I figured what was the point in going to see it? I already knew how it was going to end -- the ship sinks, and almost everyone aboard dies.

Oops, I guess that should have been a spoiler alert.

When Titanic was a current movie, one of my stepmom's friends (or maybe it was her sister) convinced her to see it, KNOWING she hates sad endings, by telling her "yes, the ship sinks, but nobody you care about dies."

              Stepmom was NOT happy afterwards.

There was some movie a lot of people seemed to like but I hated, about a hit man with his four-year-old daughter or something like that. Horribly depressing all the way through. Probably came out in the early-mid 90's. I won't say it was a bad movie; for all I know it might have been the best ever made, but not at all to my taste.

I'm gonna add kill bill and bubba hotep to the list.
bubba hotep might have been funny if hadn't spent the entire movie talking about the growth on his penis.

I think you may be referring to The Professional a.k.a. Leon. It might have been Natalie Portman's first movie. I loved it but I can see how others don't like it.

Titanic was lame as hell. Blew me away with stupidity. *SPOILER ALERT* She had the jewel the entire time then just chucked it off the boat? Bullshit. No one in their right mind would do that.

Pearl Harbor, if you wanted a movie with any factuality about Pearl Harbor, was a God awful movie. If you wanted a romance film based on real events minus almost any historical accuracy, it was a great movie.

Twilight. I went to see it at my school's theater because it only cost a couple bucks and a cute friend asked me to go with her. That was the worst acting in a movie I've ever seen in my life and they did a disservice to all actors everywhere.

Chicago. My grandparents rented it once while I was visiting them, and I absolutely hated it. There was only one character I even remotely felt sorry for (Roxie's husband), and he spent the entire movie getting manipulated and screwed over by his heartless bitch of a wife. Literally every other single character was completely unlikable and I spent the entire movie wishing a horrible death upon all of them. And then to top it all of, the aforementioned heartless bitch gets away with murder. God that movie was awful.

Probably not as bad as Twilight (which I haven't and likely won't ever be seeing), but Eragon was pretty awful, acting-wise. Hell, the actor couldn't even manage to remember his own freaking dragon was female, and at one point where he refers to her as "him," they don't even bother to reshoot the scene, and just overdub it. >_<

I only saw it because a younger relative during the holidays was a fan, and I didn't have to pay for my ticket. Spent the first quarter of the movie replacing the names with names from Star Wars because it was an almost perfect rip-off.

Thank you; I think it was called "The Professional."

The Professional and Leon are two names to the same movie. Just depends on whether you are from the US or France.

Both Salt and The Tourist were both over-rated.

I do dislike Angelina a lot, and I am biased, but I really can't believe there's such a media storm with every one of her up and coming movies. Especially with The Tourist, it was supposed to be this overly awesome, amazing collaberation of two of the "best" actors.

That movie sucked so much. The action in Salt was decent enough to keep me moving at the gym (that's where I watched it), but I'm so over all the Angelina Jolie hype. Can we all please get over her already?
