Totally with you on this one.

His best stuff is his really early stuff, and after that he just sort of slowly and steadily went off the rails, it seems.

I own a copy of the play too....and yeah Jude Law and Julia Roberts can be overrated but in this film....I like them. The film itself is just so amazingly good.

For me, Bill Murray is one of them. Sure, he was good in Ghostbusters, but a lot of his other stuff I just find incredibly unfunny and/or unimpressive. Maybe dry humor isn't my thing, but I never understood the fanwank over him.

Also, John Fucking Wayne. He played the same character in just about every movie, and none of them were people I would have cared to be around. White man good, red man/black man lower form of life. Woman pretty but stupid. Gah!

I've enjoyed a few Billy Murray films, like Stripes. However, I was totally bored by everyone in The Life Aquatic. Great cast (Murray, Owen Wilson, Jeff Goldblum, Willem Dafoe, etc.) but it just fell so flat. Actually, if we were to have an overrated directors thread, I would put Wes Anderson.

Although his "acting" is the same, I can think of at least one John Wayne movie that doesn't (to the best of my memory) follow that pattern: "The High and the Mighty."

Definately Tom "I'm really just being myself in every movie" Cruise.

ROFL gotta agree with you there. He was doing an interesting batch of movies with Vanilla Sky and Eyes Wide Shut but after that meh ...don't care.

Murray's a case where the role has to fit him. If he gets that, it's easily his best work. But if he has to try another style he falls flat.

And I'm surprised it took so long for Tom Cruise. I would have thought he would have been brought up MUCH sooner.

Bill Murray was great in Wild Things...and Ghostbusters. Other than that I don't pay much attention.

Has Al Pacino been mentioned yet?

His acting is appalling. I don't understand why people like him. Shouting is not acting. Raising your voice does not automatically add weight and emotion to your statements.

I haven't really seen him in a lot of movies....but I did like him and DeNiro in "Righteous Kill". They make a good team.

Whew. I thought I was the only one who didn't like Tom Cruise. Everyone I've ever met has told me that Tom Cruise is the greatest actor of our generation (meaning mine & theirs - these are all people who are the same age as me).

Here is my take on Tom Cruise: He can't act his way out of a paperbag even if it's soaking wet, falling apart, has a gps system AND a seeing eye dog helping him."

I loved Heath Ledger in A Knight's Tale, The Brother's Grimm, and The Order. I forgot he was in Ned Kelly too (which was a good movie). I miss him. I looked forward to seeing him in movies.

Matt Damon & Ben Affleck. Also Ryan Reynolds. If you ask me, Ryan Reynolds looks like a poor man's Ben Affleck. I've seen him in the Green Lantern get-up and IMHO, he looks like Ben Affleck did in Daredevil! (Though I think Jack T. Chance from CS might have a quibble with me over that).

James Dean is another overrated actor. The only reason he's even considered good is because 1. He made 3(?) movies and 2. he died young.
Oh Holy Trinity, the Goddess Caffeine'Na, the Great Cowthulhu, & The Doctor, Who Art in Tardis, give me strength. Moo. Moo. Java. Timey Wimey

Really? I think Ryan Reynolds is much more attractive than Affleck. Affleck has a weird chin...thing. It's not even like a normal cleft chin. Plus the fact that he's probably one of the worst actors walking around these days. Oddly enough, his brother's a pretty good actor, especially in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, which also has great performances from Brad Pitt, Sam Rockwell, and Sam Shepard. (And a cameo from James Carville. Seriously.) But then he did that weird Joaquin Phoenix documentary and

Hey, that's another overrated actor for the list! Joaquin Phoenix. Bleh. There was no way I could watch him and the ditz from Legally Blonde play one of the most iconic couples in country music.

I agree with you on Ryan Reynolds. Yum. Ben Affleck, yuck.

Although I disagree with your take on Reese Witherspoon. She's an excellent actress and a very genuine person for genuine reasons, unlike a lot of Hollywood's royalty these days.

See, to me, Reese Witherspoon just gets mixed up with Kate Hudson and Catherine Heigl and all those other blonde chicks in romantic comedies who, despite being gorgeous, financially sound, and with a successful career, just can't find true happiness because they haven't found the right man yet. And, inexplicably, they end up with *completely unattractive male comedian*. There's just no range. In real life, she may be the sweetest person ever, but I don't think she could act her way out of a pair of heels.
