Ok...so what makes Gaga so great?

I do have one question. From the few articles I have read by those that have met to interview her she seems to want it to be known that she does NOT want to be called by her real name, at all. Either Lady Gaga or Gaga...nothing else.
Does she dislike her real name that much or just that her name and image of herself growing up and the possibility that it carries a previous reputation etc carry that with it thus she needed a new persona?

And we all know its wigs, but why the obsession with blonde hair? these are more curious questions than anything. and for the heck of it i will answer my own question, cause blondes have more fun.

from the articles i've read, lady gaga is just the public persona she's created for herself. her fans have come to know her as gaga, so in public she's always gaga for them.

however, in private among her friends, family, lovers, etc., she prefers stephanie, her given name.

It's because she's a crazy SOB. And she panders to the crazy SOB crowd. Honestly, to me it feels like she tries to hard to be ridiculous. That kind of craziness doesn't just come naturally.

I disagree. I know a lot of people who dress ridiculously. I'd dress ridiculously if I thought I could get away with it. Unfortunately, I don't have the time, the money, or the standing to do that. She has time, money, and she doesn't have to worry about concerning people too much because they KNOW she's going to come up with a crazy outfit. That sort of craziness comes naturally to a lot of people I know.

I think its more that she doesn't HAVE to care what you think, so she'll do what she wants because nobody's going to stop her. Unfortunately, also nobody's going to tell her when something she tries looks REALLY, REALLY bad on her. But I think that's a side-effect of her outfits, not the point.

I think of her clothes as something like Matt Smith as The Doctor on Doctor Who's continued assertion that 'Bow ties are cool'. Its not that he (The Doctor, not Matt Smith) is trying to be deliberately uncool, its just that he has a different idea of cool.

The difference is, The Doctor has River Song to shoot his hat when he decides fezes are cool. She doesn't have the (metaphorical) River Song trying to keep her grounded, so she (metaphorically) continues wearing a fez. Or a Stetson. Stetsons are cool.

I haven't listened to a lot of her stuff, but I don't really know why so many people consider her untalented. From what I hear, she writes at least her own lyrics, and if she does, then the least you can say is she's a highly talented lyricist. She does better than I could, and I'm an egotist, so that's actually praise.

And I don't know if she's unattractive. I don't really know what's attractive in ladies. Especially Ladies Gaga. That should be the proper pluralization. Or is it? I mean, Knights Errant is right, but that's because Knight is the noun and Errant is an adjective. If Gaga is a type of adjective (indicating what type of lady she is) or a title (like Lords Northumberland) then Ladies Gaga would be right. But if Lady Gaga is her new full name than Lady Gagas would be right...

Okay, tangent aside.

1) I don't think she's trying to be weird.
2) I think she just doesn't have anyone to tell her when weird isn't necessarily good
3) She's certainly a highly talented lyricist if nothing else.

Here's the thing: If she never dressed like that, would she get NEARLY as much attention as she is? I'd be willing to bet my next few paychecks she wouldn't be as popular. It's a near certainty that she gets a lot of popularity for being out there. I'm sure she knows this too. As a result, it plays a part in how she acts and dresses for the crowds.

Entertainment is a business and I doubt that point is lost on her.

makes sense. but this is also because i didn't pay attention to her when she first came around so all the new and interesting details that a good fan should know were unknown to me. but she MUST be dedicated if she goes on 150 day tours. This is based on some quip/quote from one of her roadies during the FUSE channel gagathon as i caught the tail end of the latest show about her. if nothing else she is VERY dedicated to her fans

I don't worship her, but I absolutely love Lady Gaga and her music. I sat down and actually listened to the lyrics and they actually do make sense. There is real meaning behind her songs. She sings about bad relationships, her sexuality, how she is proud of who she is and how we all should feel the same about ourselves. She also shows off her flaws, like in the song "Judas". She admits in the song that she is in love with some exes that betrayed her.

I can never resist rolling down the windows and turning up the radio when I hear "Born This Way" It makes me feel so good about myself.

Gaga's got quite a nose on her

I have a very similar nose

but seriously so does Cher(actually when I dyed my hair black I was told I resembled Cher in her younger days)

I'm just glad that so far she's selling based off her music and fashion(albeit sometimes questionable), and NOT her body, and that she's so far managed to avoid becoming the trainwreck Ms Spears became.

Most here have heard of her and maybe even listen to her songs but Janis Joplin was uglier than homemade sin but she had a voice second to none. She was very talented and took herself out way too early.
While I don't like their music Christina and GaGa have great voices, I don't find them to be very attrative. Britney and Jessica Simpson I find attrative but their voices leave a lot to be desired. Madonna? I've never liked her music or her, Cher? Some of her music is pretty good but she's right hard on the eyes.
I find Allison Kraus to be both extremely talented but very beautiful. She has the voice of an angel.

I myself think that Lady Gaga nowadays resembles someone trying way, way too hard in a drag queen contest.

I think Kellie Pickler and Carrie Underwood are two of the best looking singers, and I also despise country music. Nice, genuine beauty, nice voices, and nice hometown girl personalities. None of this craziness.

My opinion...

(because I'm sure that all of you were just dying to know what I thought about her...)

... is that she's talented but she has to do all of this outrageous imagery to be noticed. All of the attention-grabbing antics that Madonna did became normal after everybody became over-exposed to it. Lady Gaga has to push the envelope further to be separated from the current pack of modern singers who, truthfully, I couldn't identify by voice alone.

I just listened to "Born This Way"... the beat of the song had me humming the words to "Express Yourself" and the spoken words parts more than reminded me of "Vogue".

Then again, I thought that "Just Dance" was Christina Aguilera.

And "(Please) Don't Stop the Music" was Madonna...

Actually at first I disliked LG for the simple reason that she was being so overhyped and in the news every other day about the latest bizarre-assed costume she was wearing.

Then World of Warcraft's Cataclysm expansion came out and the Worgen were a playable race with new dance moves. Being who I am I wanted to see the original dance it was based on. LG's "Poker Face" video.

I watched it and I had to admit that while the lyrics themselves weren't all that great, her delivery of them and the fact that she sings in two registers was...well...catchy.

Then I heard her stance on Homosexual Rights. This is a large issue for me since I have several gay friends who are dear to me and I want to see them happily married to the partners that they're sharing their lives with and to have all the benefits that marriage offers the rest of us.

Then there was the Weird Al issue. Whereupon she came out and said that the refusal of Weird Al's request to parody a song (not that he needs it under the laws concerning satire and parody) came from her manager and not her. Once she heard the song she was flattered that Weird Al parodied her and taking the position that so many other artists take by saying that you know you've really made it when his Weirdness takes a poke at you.

Now I'm kicking myself for letting myself get bent out of shape for a gimmick. Especially in light of the fact that two of my favorite comedians used gimmicks to get where they are today. Larry the Cable Guy was a dweeby comedian when he was in college and he was doing the same jokes as LtCG, but he could not really go anywhere until he developed the persona. Eddie Izzard is another one. He was just another weirdo comedian who used a free flowing stream of consciousness style of comedy that was out there at best.

But as for the "cult of personality" that is forming around her? How is this different from say Michael Jackson who in spite all the things he has done wrong (like the uncontestable one where he dangled a child over a balcony) people now look to him as if he was the patron saint of Music.

Eddie Izzard is a transvestite. The dress is not part of the act. Sometimes he wears women's clothing, sometimes he wears men's clothing. For one of his more recent tours, he went full on drag with fake boobs. But he really took off in America after Dressed to Kill, in which he wore gender neutral clothing with a feminine twist. And no boobs.

People like Lady Gaga because she's batshit crazy or acts like it.

I like Lady Gaga for her music, and I'm sure a lot of other people do as well. It's fun, catchy, dancy pop music.
