I enjoyed Elfen Lied until the end, which had plot holes I could have flown the Millennium Falcon through, they were so huge. I enjoyed the juxtaposition of cute with insane brutal violence.
That's just me though, I love Berserk and Blade of the Immortal too.
That ones a bit more obscure than Elfen Lied. And even more messed up, too.

Faith is about what you do. It's about aspiring to be better and nobler and kinder than you are. It's about making sacrifices for the good of others. - Dresden
One thing to keep in mind, though, is that MLP IS in fact directed at kids FIRST. Not only, but first. It's good, and aimed at children. Not good despite being aimed at children.

It LOOKS like a kiddie cartoon, but is anything but. Basically she's trying to prevent him from defying God by building a machine in the future that forces all women to stop aging at the age of 12. She's MEANT to kill him, but instead decides to keep him occupied so he won't get the idea in the first place. However, she's a bit trigger happy.
The opening LOOKS innocent, up until you get to the point where she starts aying that she'll beat the crap out of you and be a cocktease

There are loads of shout outs tho, which adults can see and snicker over while it passes over the heads of children. XD Same goes for a lot of animated movies, like the Toy Story trilogy.

I love those. I never thought they were messed up. Maybe there is something wrong with me. i just thought they were sincere. The villains are villains. they do the same kind of atrocities real world villains do. instead of the vague "conquer the world/death ray that is never fired" trope.
the one manga that has made me unconfortable enough to stop readin was Tokyo Akazuki. I am ok with the physical violence, but there is a sexual abuse secene that got too much for me.

Sesame Street is another example. I can name a few that would most likely shoot RIGHT over the kids heads, but the adults would get them:
^Same here. I love the fact that MLP is doing episodes that are centred round background characters like Granny Smith and the Cakes; it just makes it more interesting to see some of the other characters apart from the mane six in detail.
