  • "I hate it, therefore....

....I'm going to keep watching/reading/listening to it just so I can rant and bitch and whine to people who *do* like it about how much I hate it."

I do not understand this mentality. Can someone explain it to me? I mean, seriously. What is the point of watching a movie or tv show, reading a book, or listening to a music that you openly and vehemently hate? I mean, I pretty much hate gory movies and torture movies. They're just not my thing at all. Does that mean I'm going to watch them and spam the hell out of their message boards on IMDb about how much I hate 'em? No. Waste of my time, waste of time for anyone reading it.

That's what I don't get about the Twilight haters. I can't even speak of it on CS because everyone is so gung ho on making fun of the "sparklies", yet why do they know so much about it if they hate it?

All I know about twighlight is from all the negative posts I've read and TBH it's not my cup of tea even if it wasn't about vampires and werewolves, those for all I know could just be genre crutches and it could be just as bad/good in peoples eyes if they were not there and 'something' else was.

I have no desire to read the books but I might eventually get round to the movies, but seeing as I still havn't popped in my LOTR that ive had for years, its place regardless is behind the harry potter movies should I ever get them in a cheap box set.

I'm almost finished reading book 3 of the Morganville vampire seriese by Rachel Caine, got books 1 and 2 and Dune in a 3 for £5 to see if it was any good, polished off book one in a sitting, book 2 didnt fare too well, I left off at chapter 4 two weeks ago, but I finished that on thursday listening to live music in the sunshine and bought 4-10 (and velocity by dean koontz to get the numbers right) friday.

Was leary that they might be a twighlight inspired fanfic, but afaik it predates it and actually has a good (so far) story, so even if twighlight has 'spoilt' vampires for many, they are still a viable plot device even in stories featuring 16 and 18 year old main characters.

I can answer this one: I know so much about it from comedians and other media figures or websites citing examples from it to demonstrate how bloody awful it is. Which leads to "That seriously doesn't happen, does it?" which leads to verifying that that does indeed seriously happen.

AKA people who hate it explaining why they hate it leading to people wanting to witness the train wreck ;p

In my opinion, this is an extension of a personality archetype seen often in CS. Here's my analysis. Note that I am not, nor do I claim to be, a psychologist or learned in those ways, these are just my guesses from being around people like this. The deepest, base-level cause, no. 1 I'll call it, seems to be a type of need for a feeling of superiority, but the mechanics stacked on top of that are a bit different. Next up at no. 2 is the desire to put yourself up by putting others down, thus elevating yourself without actually putting in the effort necessary to elevate yourself; bullies also use a form of this. On top of that at no. 3 comes the method of achieving no. 1 in the format of no. 2: never being satisfied. Always finding something to complain about. NEEDING a reason to complain. This may or may not be coupled with base desire no. 1a, which is a need to be a center of attention; on top of that, secondary no. 2a may be a desire to be the center of attention by finding something popular that you don't like, and being vocal about it so that it causes controversy, which answers no. 3 in that it gives you something to be unsatisfied or angry about. Thus, said people find satisfaction by both actively seeking out things they don't like and either viewing them or claiming to have viewed them, then complaining AT everyone who brings up said thing (and some who don't) - preferably loudly enough that no one can help but overhear and all conversation is derailed. You are now the center of attention and you feel important. People like this, I think, subscribe to some form of the old statement that there's no such thing as BAD publicity, publicity is publicity.

I know a guy who professes to hate alcohol - not hate others drinking it, just hate it for himself. He likes to boast that he doesn't drink. Yet he'll ask acquaintances for tastes of their drinks just so he can go, "YECCH! BLEACHHH! EYAHHHGH! HOW THE HELL CAN YOU DRINK THAT!? THAT TASTES HORRIBLE, YUCK!!!!" And he will do this at caps-lock volume, making a huge scene, just so that everyone else is forced to look up, hear his bitching, and know his opinion. He also likes to be vocal about his opinions, especially the bad ones, and claims he's not being rude but, rather, being honest; if he looks at a restaurant menu and thinks the prices are too high, he'll wait for a waitress to offer to take his order before saying, "No, your prices are too damned high!!" and walking out.

Twilight is NOT my thing. That general sort of story usually isn't. As well, I play Vampire: the Masquerade, and am mildly annoyed by other interpretations of the vampire mythos. Do you like it? Great! I have zero problem with that. As long as someone else takes my, "No, thanks" nicely, I never have an issue with others enjoying things I don't. It's not just that everything goes more smoothly when you're nice about stuff like that; I, personally, don't see any kind of benefit to railing on others because their preferences differ from mine, or because they enjoy things that I really don't. Twilight is a poor example - I don't tend to like things like that, but I can't truly say I don't like Twilight because I haven't watched/read it. Let's see, what do I really hate... I hate huge cars. Where I live, you still see Hummers and stretch SUVs. I think they're obscene. But if you like 'em, or want to own a gigantic car? Go on ahead. Just don't be upset if you ask me what I think of it, say "yes" when I ask if you want honestly, and (simply and calmly) lay out my opinion. Otherwise, you like it, I shouldn't toss my opinion AT you like I think you care.

It's okay to not like things!
It's okay, but don't be a dick about it!
It's okay to not like things,
But don't be a dick about the things you don't like!

            I have a few theories.

            1. Bile Fascination
            2. They see potential and hope it gets better.
            3. It was once good and they hope it goes back to it's roots.
            4. They secretly like it, but don't want to admit it.
            5. They have an internet review show which reviews obscure things.

Funny you should mention this one. I was just about to bring up a particular website myself. The site being Food Network Humor. It is a site whose very existence, it seems, is solely for its creators to bash the hell out of everything they hate about Food Network. Which, if you spend enough time looking at the site, is everything about Food Network. Granted, there's a few shows I don't like on there either but, again, I avoid the ones I don't like and just watch the ones I do like.

I find websites like that amusing. They are just there to hate on the shows and say nasty things about the stars. One I got sick of reading was television without pity. I used to read the forums because there were interesting discussions about the shows, but too much of it was complaining. Even as someone who likes to rant and rave about things, there is only so much of that shit I can take. Hell, some of the people have even demanded that shows they don't like be canceled. It's one thing if you don't like a show, but at least respect those who do watch and like it.

I wouldn't mind stuff like FNH so much, honestly, if they were actually creative with their insults. Instead, it's a constant, endless stream of the exact same jokes and insults repeated a million times over. To where I'm sitting here thinking 'Ok, we get it. You think that Guy Fieri is a raging douchecanoe, Giada's a snob (which I will agree with), and that the same 'Paula Deen/butter' joke is so frelling hilarious that it must be restated and repeated at least once a week'. 'course, the site probably wouldn't exist if they did the logical thing and just vented once before moving on with their lives.

I was a member of the anti-Twilight nuts for a while, but it was just exhausting and pointless, frankly. The only reason I was like that was because I was tired of being told my sex drive must not work or I must be a lesbian because I didn't like it. I do know nice fans mostly, though. The anti people are even more nuts than the superfans.

Why people keep this up for years is beyond me. It's especially irritating to go on forums for a series and see the SAME people posting nitpicks/rants/insults for years after the first installment was released. Get a life, people.

                      I'm not a freakshow fan.

I have an Edward shirt. Not going to lie. He was my background on my computer for a long time.

I am not waiting in line hours before the premiere. I've never made it to the premiere. I've always went a few days later.

I don't talk about it very often, either.

I have all four books. I've read all four of 'em. Heck, I even actually really liked the first one (read it in 12 hours). So I guess I'm somewhat of a fan, but only of the first book. I didn't much care for the rest of the series, and the movies just aren't that great to me. If other people like the entire series and the movies, hey that's awesome. There's stuff I like that's not other people's cup o' tea either.

I'm gonna chime in here....I have read all the books in the series...I think they are well written and the way they created vampire characters are interesting. They changed stuff up a lot...the sparkly thing is kinda weird but I find it interesting that they NEVER sleep and can go out in the daylight.

The movies...meh I don't think they do the books justice really. I've seen 1 and 2, skipping 3 and will see 4 and 5 because they cover the last book and I love the last book. The third book pissed me off because it left so many unanswered questions.

However when it comes to vampires I prefer the True Blood kind....dead sexy some of those guys are!!

As for hating stuff...I hate plenty of stuff like gory movies or action types or those dumbass inane comedies but I just don't watch them. If a movie is on that I'm finding annoying I'll get up and leave.

Myself, it was "know your enemy" or more to the point, don't bag something out or argue about it if you don't know what you're talking about, just like I didn't argue about christianity until I'd read the bible.

I think that the Twilight books are horribly written. I've read every one because the prose is so purple its funny.

I can't see why someone would enjoy them, but if they like them they like them. Doesn't mean that they're a bad person.

As for the movies, I saw the first. It struck me as well directed and fairly well acted.
