In all blunt honesty: Twilight in the hands of a better writer probably could have been pretty good. If you cut out her crazy mormon stuff, the "omfg look at his abs" crap, took off the sparkles and replaced Mary Sue with a strong female lead you might have ended up with something half decent.
But in her hands though its.....yeah: Vampires, Werewolves & Mormons, Oh My!
She's like George Lucas. Not a bad idea per say, but don't leave her alone with it.

Perhaps there should be a 'directors cut' of the book where MS Paperclip chims in every once in a while
"it looks like you are trying to write a book."
OK I've said before, not read or watched twighlight, so I don't know how badly written it genuinly is, but I think the message of "same story" different author holds water and yes Starwars was better (original trilogy) when others took the helm be it writing the final draft or directing it.
Harrison Ford once said something along the lines of "George, you can write this crap, just don't expet anyone to say it."Last edited by Ginger Tea; 08-09-2011, 06:28 PM.

It's not hos fault that some sparkly vampire wannabe jumped in at the last second and stopped several thousand pounds of american steel from turning her into a greasy stain.
Frankly the author is on my list of people to go after when I get a time machine. Not to kill her...just steer her into a business major in college or something.“There are worlds out there where the sky is burning, where the sea's asleep and the rivers dream, people made of smoke and cities made of song. Somewhere there's danger, somewhere there's injustice and somewhere else the tea is getting cold. Come on, Ace, we've got work to do.” - Sylvester McCoy as the Seventh Doctor.

Last year while Child Rum was at Speech Camp, I was talking to a few mothers (around my age, in our 30s), who were reading the Twilight Series with their teen daughters/sons.
The way the imprinting was described to me was: I have found the one who was born to be mine for eternity. NOT "OMG! That new born baby is hot".
Edward & Bella imprinted on each other. Not because they thought each other "beautiful" but because they recognized each other being their "better half"; their literal soul mates, so to speak.
As for reading Twilight and seeing how badly it was written. Meh. I've actually read worse than that. The only thing I really liked about it was that after 2-3 pages of reading it to Child Rum at night, she'd be sound asleep. Great putting child down for the night material there.
Though I did think she is a terrible first-person writer and that she should have written it in 3rd person. But then again, I kept comparing the writing to V. C. Andrews (of Flowers in the Attic fame), and wondering how Ms. Andrews would have tackled this story line. (But then again, I'm a huge V.C. Andrews fan).Oh Holy Trinity, the Goddess Caffeine'Na, the Great Cowthulhu, & The Doctor, Who Art in Tardis, give me strength. Moo. Moo. Java. Timey Wimey

There is a popular sci fi show that did "knew the wife as a baby while he was an adult" thing but in such a way it wasn';t weird
Other writers have done it as sensing your soulmate was just born but having it take them until the baby's late teens to find the person.
Or not meet their soulmate until late teens so that the fact the seeming young person is actually hundreds of years old can be glossed over.
To me it's a bit creepy to "know this is who I am going to marry someday" when you know the person growing up and are likely going to be in their lives in some adult capacity.
It's hard not to develop paternal feelings for the kids in your life even if they aren't yours so to turn around and want to be something other than that when they hit 18 would feel odd.Jack Faire

Also, it's sexist. Why? Cuz firstly the girl has no input and second, Leah can't imprint and is infertile.

In most stories that use Soulmates of a magical nature neither one has any choice about it and often it forces a person to completely change their worldview.
IE in a book a Vampire hates humans thinks of them as cattle but then his soulmate is revealed to him and she is a human. Unable to run from it he is forced to change a very big part of who he is to be with her.
However yeah if the imprinting thing is by choice then yeah it would kind of suck for the girl.Jack Faire

The guy can choose, the girl can't. In the case of Quil and Claire (think that's right; been a long time since I found that online book), Claire is just a child so has no choice in the matter. Basically, Claire will grow up with "Uncle Quil" til she reaches sexual maturity, then he will seduce her. It's kind of a creepy situation.
Leah is painted as a bitch cuz she happens to be mad that her boyf imprinted on her cousin. Um, I think Leah has every right to be mad in a situation like that. Also, it's hinted once or twice in the book that Leah has gone thru the menopause already as a result of becoming a werewolf, which is the sexist part. If imprinting is to further the species, it would logically make more sense for the girls to imprint, since technically speaking a pack of females with just a few males has a chance of more cubs being born than one of mostly males with just one or two females."Oh wow, I can't believe how stupid I used to be and you still are."

In evolution back when Ug didn't know his name was Ug and they were all living in a cave a male would mate with one female and then keep any other male from mating with her to make sure it was his genetic heritage she passed onto the next generation however the female's only concern is passing on her own genetic heritage which since that happens no matter who she mates with will look for a broader range of mates and attempt to mate with more than one man to increase her chances for offspring.
Thus it would make more sense for a female werewolf to have guys imprint on her so that if he was infertile or something happened she could still seek out other mates and propagate the species.Jack Faire

And it makes no fucking sense at all biologically for Jacob to imprint on Nessie. Nessie is a vampire/human hybrid as opposed to a werewolf. A lot of hybrids, for example, mules are infertile. So even if you take away the creeptastic factor of a grown man imprinting on a baby, it still doesn't make sense if the argument for imprinting is that it's to further the species.
And yeah; if the girls were controlling the imprinting, that would work far better for breeding. If for example, Claire found out that Quil couldn't get it up, then if she had the control she could ditch him and seek a mate who could."Oh wow, I can't believe how stupid I used to be and you still are."

Also, you're all arguing the biology of a word where vampires sparkle.
