Edward has a whole family though, plus there are clearly other vampires and thus other immortals to socialize with who would be far more understanding and easier to relate too.

Why would you even want to date a mortal? Someone you would inevitable have to watch grow old and die? If you had children with them, then everyone gets to watch mommy die. If you had the ability to make them immortal as well, you run the risk of them ending up being just as miserable as you and resenting you for it.

Even just friendships with mortals would suck for similar reasons. If anything, you'd withdraw from the world, hang out with other immortals and laugh at society as a whole from your computer. -.-

That would come down to the personality of both immortals though. If either immortal is a stubborn dick, he's not going to change his attitude regardless. Also, high school is not exactly a shining example of racial and cultural acceptance in society. If anything, its the worst point in your life for it.

Really really really glad I didn't go to your high school. The kids in my high school were actually more likely to accept people who were different than half of the adults I have ever met.

Oh, comparatively speaking my high school was pretty great ( if not light years ahead of many ). By virtue of where I live if nothing else. ( aka multicultural as all hell ). Its just there was still that core group of jocks who thought homosexuality was transmitted like the flu. Still, you could be openingly gay in my high school and not get bullied into suicide like some places.

But therein is my point. Teenagers are rather self absorbed and they'll always be a group that lacks empathy.

I enjoyed my time in high school, but I would never want to repeat it frankly. If I had immortality at my disposal, that would be the last place I'd head too. Even if you were able to convince them that you're totally in grade 8 despite looking 17. Yeah, no worries, I just got held back....uh.....4 years.

If her mythology is even remotely consistent (which I wouldn't place any bets on), then the 17-year-old vampire wouldn't have any choice but to act the same for all of eternity. They're arrested, they've stopped, they cannot advance. To learn anything, properly, they'd have to be able to change which they're not supposed to be able to do. Technically, they shouldn't be able to even remember the names of people they meet, but that's just too hard to write.

One of my RP characters is a vampire who married six times; all times, to mortals. He offered them the gift; they turned it down cuz they wanted to live out their lives as humans, die and go to heaven. This was back in the past, when he'd been fairly recently changed and still thought of himself as human. He changed his attitude after his sixth wife died; that was when he lost his religion.

Incidentally, my character does not attend high school. He never went to school in his life; he was changed at seventeen and as a kid, came from a poor working class family who could not afford to send him to school. Instead, he worked with his father. He doesn't have any problems about getting into bars; he's got fake ID and you know, can use mind control anyway.

He doesn't act like seventeen; I went by Anne Rice, where the mind ages but not the body. Incidentally; imagine being a vampire like Claudia. Your mind is that of an adult woman, but your body remains a child. Would be enough to send you insane. O.o

Oh yeah, and my character is sterile. That kind of thing happens when you die as a human.

What a surprisingly convenient excuse to never have any character development. >.>

Yeah, I picture it more Highlanderish(?) like that.

And popsicles melt. And aren't really the right consistancy, if you want to get technical.

And you know, this is one of the many, many things that bugged me about the series. They make Edward sound like he's absolutely ice cold. When really, he's a corpse...he's gonna be the temperature of the surroundings. When they do have sex, the author makes it sound like she's having sex with an ice cube. When they cuddle, she's gotta have a blanket around her because OMG HE'S SO COLD.

Honestly, 70ish degrees in an average room...not that cold, Bella, deal with it!

Also, I know this is being picky, but after lying next to Bella... wouldn't Edward get warmer? A snake has cold blood, but will warm up if it sleeps in contact with a warm object. Hell, even a corpse would take on the warmth of a live person's body if they slept next to one.

I live in a metropolitan area where I rarely see instances of racism. It is more common to see someone getting arrested for committing a crime to admit they committed that crime but to claim racism is why they got arrested.

"Dude you wouldn't have arrested a white dude for robbing that store!!!"

Or the racism isn't from directions you would expect it.

African American person getting pissed at Caucasian "What the hell do you mean you understand? You don't understand shit you have never been poor your white!!!"

The people in my area that people discriminate against. Russians.

Given that most of the people of Russian descent are themselves Caucasian I don't see it as racism and the prejudice there is more about culture than skin color.

Just because your neighborhood is all cozy and there's more throwing of the race card than over acts of racism doesn't mean that racism has gone away, it's generally just less overt about it.

And white on white racism is just as racist as white on yellow (WWII) or black on white (most invalid uses of the race card).

Actually, the fact that people think that it's gone makes it more dangerous and insidious than the obvious stuff.

I don't think it's gone I don't think it ever will be unless we all suddenly look exactly the same but I think that a lot of people are trying to subtly bring it back.

Also I don't consider discriminating against someone based entirely on their cultural heritage to be a racist thing. It's actually more a hold over of Cold War beliefs when all Russians were the evil bad guys that wanted to kill us all.

My parents growing up were taught to hate and fear all people from the USSR. It was the bogeyman they were threatened with. They were the evil people oppressing the East Germans.

Now people seem to have a knee jerk, "Oh my god that girl has a Russian accent she wants to oppress us all"

It is prejudice but not the racism kind.
