  • Fifty Shades/Magic Mike

I have a theory....I wonder how many of the women currently wetting their panties over revamped Twilight fanfic (pun intentional) and Channing Tatum would freak out if they found BDSM porn on their husband's computer? Or went to a strip club?

Frankly, I just don't understand the appeal....Ladies, there's all the porn you could ever want on the internet, and it's free.

AA, watching porn is dirty. Reading books and watching movies is art so it's totally different. I'd love to see a guy friend tell his girlfriend that he's going to a strip club since she went to see Magic Mike. Seriously, is there REALLY much of a difference if he doesn't get a lap dance?

My understanding is that the movie has a plot... and no graphic sex. If that's correct, it's not at all the same as either watching real strippers perform in person or watching porn, even if it's *about* strippers.

Every woman I've talked to who has seen the movie has said something to the effect of, "The story was a waste of time, I wanted to see more booty!"

Well speaking personally, I prefer to have a story with my erotica. I'd far rather read a book that has sex scenes in it that are part of a fantastic story. Hence the large amount of chicklit in my bookshelves.

However, I found Fifty Shades Of Grey to be uniformly dull, the characters boring cardboard cutouts and not worth paying for (I borrowed it off a friend to see what all the fuss was about).

To quote my sister, Magic Mike "was basically just a bunch of guys stripping the entire movie". No mention of a plot by her at all when I asked her about it.

My friend writes BDSM erotica (her first novel comes out this month!). She also does BDSM. While 50 Shades is going to boost her sales I believe, I think the women who read it and think it portrays real BDSM are going to be shocked when they read my friend's book and learn about real BDSM. Seriously- the main character ends up in the hospital at one point.

It's like how people saw that episode of CSI and think they know about the furry community now. One viewpoint does not equal knowledge.

Especially when it's a vastly distorted viewpoint, as in Fur and Loathing (that CSI episode). Andara and I were extras on that episode. I've been told by friends that I'm briefly visible, but I didn't see myself. *shrug*

The production assistant for the show was/is a furry, and did what he could to reduce the outrageous nonsense that was in the original script. The director insisted on keeping enough salacious parts in to make the show shocking and outrageous, though. Think about that: The episode that was aired was much tamer than the original script for it!

                  Quoting my friend's plot summary.

"Some guy is a stripper in order to get money to start a roofing business, and he's dating a slut. He seems happy. Then he talks some other guy into being a stripper, but that goes badly. Then he breaks up with his slutty girlfriend so he can be with the good, virginal girlfriend, and she doesn't think there's anything wrong with the fact that he pressured some kid into being a stripper who didn't want to, so they managed to offend both genders."
"Nam castum esse decet pium poetam

My cousin went and saw Magic Mike and didn't like it.

I'm just surprised that I haven't heard some girl proudly say, "Finally, a movie that shows scantily clad MEN!" as if there haven't been tons of movies like that before.

Is "Females rejoice! Your Avengers is here!" close enough?

That was from a critic... a guy... who I have firmly placed in the category of "completely irrelevant."

It's from the review by Schmoes Know Movies, if you want to know what site to never bother with.

There was actually a huge debate about this in the paper a couple of weeks ago (and I was going to put it up here).

I'll break each argument down into parts (not concerned about the movie as I haven't seen it):

Would I be shocked if I found BDSM porn on my boyfriends computer? (keep in mind he has around 2.5TB of porn. Yes, terabytes) Probably not. He has plenty of porn and I know his tastes. We have also watched a couple of porn films together. Given the size of his collection, he MIGHT have some "tie and tease" porn in there, but that'd be about it. Most of his porn is girl-on-girl, hardcore, threesomes, gangbangs and the occasional shemale thrown in there.

Fifty Shades of Grey and real/fake sex: I think it varies from person to person. It's kind of like one person arguing that you're not a "real" fan of a particular anime because you haven't watched all the episodes in subbed form.

The actual book in question: I have read it. ANd I bought all three. While I do prefer more decent-ish reading (I read Jodi Picoult and Charlaine Harris novels), everyone needs to read a trashy novel once in a while

the only thing that bothered me with 50shades is how everyone treated it like the omg totally pinnical of kink! really, it was jsut a hammed up and wayyyy padded harliquin book. coulda been trimmed to one novel instead of three with good ediing, but trilogies are the fad right now.
story of o accomplished more, in half the volume of the first 50shades book, to show how far BDSM can go.

to magic mike: i admit i have no intrest in it. if i wanna watch half naked men roam about i'll go watch 300.
All uses of You, You're, and etc are generic unless specified otherwise.

How does it compare to the Beauty or Exit to Eden books?

People ask if I saw Magic Mike. No, I am a lesbian and it doesn't look like to have much of a plot. No thanks.

If my partner had BDSM on the computer or went to a stripclub, I'd join. I wouldn't practice full on BDSM, though.
