  • online fanfilm/ movie development.

has anyone noticed the fan-film and low budget movies that are uploaded to youtube are starting to be as good as anything churned out by the big market?

    examples of movies:

    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oDpXu4j7ibM&feature=slpl (deadpool)

    Music videos

i guess the point is: do you think the advancements for user-made content are changing the concepts of entertainment from blockbuster to b-lister again, like when VHS was first available?

I can't really say for sure if such things are "changing the concepts of entertainment," but it does make me happy that advanced technology has become so readily available that people are now capable of bringing their own visions to life with relative ease.

i guess it jsut reminds me of the surge of low-budget filmaking when home vid equipment/vhs became available to the masses, and again with the dvd surge (athough some vids are terrible, like thankskilling dvd).

      also, awesome Portal vid

just watched all 8 episodes (and bonus deck crew shorts) of Space Janitors, watched episode one when it first came out on the escapist website, mostly static shot green screen work but some physical props like doors used.

Snowblind a cowboys on motorbikes set in the near post apocalyptic future film I got of vodo last year (but not actually watched all the way through) again mostly static green screen, but it had a nice asthetic to it, which may have been lost if they could afford to do sweeping camera movements with the scenery moving accordingly.

I'm rather thankful that we have not been deluged with a crap tonne of blair witch/paranormal activity type movies by the general public, just lazy low/no budget studios.

I wonder what channel awesome could pull off if they didn't make 'movies' that are basically ego strokes and self referencing malarky.
Granted I enjoyed Kickassia and Suburban Knights, but given that Brad Jones has made a few movies with the same crew for a few years now it's OK to see him his wife and close friends play different parts each movie, neither is a sequal to another.
Yet with the CA movies it's Doug Walker playing the Nostalgia Critic doing something, not a character doing something who just happens to be played by Doug and that is part of the charm of the anniversary movies, but who knows what they could do if they put their mind to it, or atleast someone elses mind for the writing.
So I'm looking forward to Nerd Quest the UK branch of CA doing a movie which may have them not playing themselves (or CA character).

Edit, Ashens from the UK branch has also done a mini series on his youtube channel, never saw the ending, he played himself (or atleast his youtube persona) caught up in the middle of something big.
Again it's people who may not be actors by trade, but can atleast act enough to make something work for this competition thingie that tied in to each episode, I don't espect high quality acting and special effects (althouh they can appear) I don't even expect anyone working with no money what so ever to even make a mockbuster like American Battleships although I'm sure it would have a better story going for it.

I am surprised people aren't redoing their favorite TV shows. I know there is the fan made Star Trek show but most TV properties seem to be left alone. I always figured at some point people would jump from writing fan fic to creating fan made movies based on such.

Fanfic is a primarily solitary endeavor that can also involve other individuals.

Creating a fanvid or fanvid series requires that you have all of those people in the same place and have some modicum of acting talent.

Although, with something like Star Trek, if you're in sou Cali, you can use some of the actual location shots (hello, Vasquez Rocks).

Well, the Mass Effect fanmovie, Red Sand, certainly looks much MUCH better than what Bioware just shat out on us with Paragon Lost.

I mean the fan movie even got Mark Meer ( voice of maleshep ) for fuck sakes. Yet EA couldn't be bothered to spent more than $500 on the budget of a one off anime OVA.

Starring Vega no less. FUCK Vega. Nobody likes Vega. Vega is the Wesley Crusher of Mass Effect. Absolutely no one likes him except his creators, who keep shoving him on the audience trying to prove how awesome he is.

Are you listening to me, EA? I will pay for DLC that lets me end Vega's life.

Fanvids or fanfic or fanplays can have a profound effect.

Take this example: 3 years ago a group of Univ of Michigan theater/music/drama wrote/produced/performed A Very Potter Musical. Now this was a parady of 3 Harry Potter books with some witty humor, decent music and alright acting. They did this because they were all Potter kids (as in tweens when the books and movies started to come out.

They filmed it (not the greatest production values but ....) and put it up on YouTube to show their families. Someone in the Potter world found it and alerted the Potter community.

the show went viral and things began to happen fast. Now most of the group has written and performed numerious other plays and doing staged show tours and one of the stars Daren CHriss has a role on the show Glee (he even replaced Daniel Radcliff on Broadway)

all of this happened because some Potter fans decided to do something no done before.
I'm lost without a paddle and I'm headed up sh*t creek.

I got one foot on a banana peel and the other in the Twilight Zone.

Wow, that's extremely well done. It actually makes me want to try out the game.

There's also a full length Mega Man fan film that was quite good IMO.

There was a Mortal Kombat short that was made a year or so back that was stellar, and I also remember a series dealing with the Street Fighter characters dealing with real life...

                            IGN isn't exactly indie.

Also, am I the only one amused by the idea of a Link to a Zelda trailer?
