So I noticed Blue Angel with Marlene Dietrich was on netflix streaming, the German version and I have never seen it so I gave it a watch.
Excellent movie, I have to admit I like Weimar vintage German films. As I frequently will do when watching an old movie I hit up wiki to see if there was something I should look for that was interesting or unusual.
Other than my normal sadness at realizing that the young men playing the students were all probably dead within 10 years of the filming thanks to compulsory military duty, it turns out that one of the actors Kurt Gerron was also a director. He turned down a number of offers to move to Hollywood to work and ended up in Holland where he was arrested and sent to Theresienstadt. While there, he was forced to make a 'documentary' on how good the conditions there were, after which he was shipped off to Auschwitz where he was killed. Now if that doesn't suck ass, I don't know what does.
