New Trek couldn't even keep that idea fresh, still not seen it, but all the Khan scenes shoehorned into "into" when there is a whole new galaxy to explore.
I think I said it in the thread, they could have foreshadowed him in this one to have it pay off in the 4th movie.

And I am probably in the controversial minority that wished Who started afresh with Eccleston as the first doctor of a reboot not the 9th.

Monsters then and now, what is a very good creature effect now is over shadowed by classic who episodes of man in rubber suit that looked like donkey vomit. I think the Ice Warrior is one of the few to survive reintroduction relatively unscathed, mind you I think his last appearance was before the 5th's so I may never have seen them outside of a Dr Who exhibit.

    Continuity? Who (sorry) needs continuity?

the episode Dalek could have been the first encounter of the species for the Doctor, but we the audience knew what they were and where they came from due to the old episodes and the cyberman's head seen as an Easter egg.

Apparently there will be a live announcement on Sunday as to who the next who is, bing had a rouges gallery of faces, someone was in downton abbey which I have not seen, but I feel he would be a poor choice, not due to his acting chops as I have not encountered them, but the whole "he was in downton abbey" aspect.

These are from my perspective not facts as I don't watch tv and have not outside of the odd show on bbc iplayer.
Eccleston was more known for movie work.
Tennant had been Casanova but I had never seen the show and only found out he was in it long after the show had ended and he was well into his 2nd year as the Doctor, other than that I had never encountered him, anything I know or can look up would be post who googling, IMO he was absolutely unknown when he first appeared.
Smith again from nowhere, outside of this movie he made resulting in short hair, I have no idea of his acting CV outside of the TARDIS.

Hell I think most Doctors were unknown stepping into the previous' shoes, yes some ended up bigger names since, but the shows I remember Pertwee and Davidson for could have been after who, there may have been some overlap in James Herriot as his character was minor but I'm sure Werzel Gummage was shown whilst Baker or Davidson were flying around the wibley wobleys.

So having someone semi famous step into the roll would be detrimental, it would be like having Mr Darcy from which ever version got panties moist taking on the roll, to some he would be Mr Darcy forever more.
Mind you I'm sure a lot of people were saying Holmes vs Kirk too.

I still would have loved Peter Swinton.

Capaldi's never done Genre work before. Well, I mean, a minor role in a Donna episode.

...That said, I love The Thick Of It, so this isn't the end of the world

I thought he was interesting as the Angel Islington in Neverwhere.

And that is the problem, it was a very major role in Chidlren of Earth, and I don't think that I will be able to not see that character instead of the Doctor.

                  Never saw Children of Earth.

I don't know if I'd call World War Z exactly Genre, though. It's a Genre movie of a type, but not exactly the same thing.

Capaldi's damn good, honestly. It hink if you give him time, you'll get around it.

To me, the Doctor should stay male... while he has said that he's heard of Time Lord's changing genders, it could be a mutation of the Time Lord genetics that caused that, so it wouldn't be a regular thing but a rare thing.

Some of the actors I think would have been good in the role of the Doctor is: Alexander Siddig, Daniel Radcliffe, John Barrowman (had he not already been Captain Jack Harkness) and even Hugh Laurie could have been a good Doctor.

"Could have been?" You make it sound like this is the last season, and the last regeneration. =^_^=

I think that both Daniel Radcliffe and Hugh Laurie are too much of "big names" to be asked to play the part, although I think Radcliffe might well jump at the chance if asked.

I feel that Domhnall Gleeson should get the nod for the next Doctor.

He's the chap that played Bill Weasley in the Harry Potter movies (Deathly Hallows part 1 and 2) and is Ginger.
“There are worlds out there where the sky is burning, where the sea's asleep and the rivers dream, people made of smoke and cities made of song. Somewhere there's danger, somewhere there's injustice and somewhere else the tea is getting cold. Come on, Ace, we've got work to do.” - Sylvester McCoy as the Seventh Doctor.

I was in my local gaming store to pick up some ultra pro sleeves for my brother to go with his early Christmas present of the rest of Android Netrunner expansions (booster pack one and creation and control) and a slave I cos well he's a Fett fan.

First time I went in and bought the stuff sans sleeves but on yahoo he mentioned them so I went back, this time there were people in, I tend to go when there is no one in save the woman who works there as it's my first port of call, 2nd time, moderately busy and I joined in on a conversation that was hopscotching between sharknado and similar movies and two of the guys talking who are my age disliked Smith, I said that his first few episodes seemed more Tennanty and it defeated the whole new personality shtick regenerations are meant to bring, Curse of the fatal death showcased that quite clearly.
If it wasn't for Karen Gillian I might not have stayed the course, or at least just bought the box set's as I had to for the first few seasons as I was without a TV and had no internet when BBC iPlayer was showing them.
The discussion of new bloke came up and they said one guy from Neverwhere was the first choice for Smith's term, but they thought a black actor was too soon.

The also said that as Gaimen wrote the doctors wife where the gender swap was referenced that it was just Neil fucking with the audience.
I happened to comment that "The doctor said it so it must be true." bit probably get's taken as cannon far too often, I said he could have let slip in that long ramble that his middle name was Sue and he had a 12" cock, had that been in the script, chances are it would be fought over as cannon and the wiki page locked due to vandalism till they decided if it was or not.

Hell the Doctor himself said he was half human (on his mothers side?), that never got referenced again.
Hell the classic era was so full of plot holes and writing into corners with regards to his and the timelords lore.
12 regenerations sounds OK when you are only moving on to the 2nd doctor, when you start a new series on the 9th and he only lasts a year, well look how low the sand's getting now.
Then you have the "Well that was a regeneration, this is a rejuvenation, two totally different things."

There was no set editors bible back in the day and scrip writers were fond of writing backstory that conflicted with itself more than the bible did, at the time you might not notice it, but now we have people documenting and citating lines and episodes, these overlaps and inconsistencies are coming to light, they may even have occurred in the modern Who, but I think they got their collective shit together and mapped out things the Doctor was not, so that script writers did not contradict the main arc.

The doctor is allowed to lie, yet no one even thinks of taking any salt with them when he opens his mouth and talks.

And the whole casting a ginger thing, even though I am a ginger myself I feel a joke line might have run it's course.

Plus it would save me the hassle of hearing people call out his name when trying to get my attention, I was called Mick Hucknal some months ago, by people who would have been children when Simply red last had a song out (fairground or whatever came last).

When Eccelston said he might come back with two heads or no heads, you never know what you are going to get, I think he could safely say that was BS, all his prior regenerations had been humanoid and his planet equally so, but saying a drastic change to Rose emphasises that he will change not just in looks.

                          edit:
When the topic was on comic movie adaptations they envied my being able to just go in and enjoy the movie as a movie, my DC knowledge is scant outside of Bat's and Supe's my Marvel a bit better, Constantine was a good movie, but as a comic adaptation, it is probably shite, I just don't know the source material that well.

Definitely too big of names, that's why I threw the "could have been" in there... depending on what part of their career they are in.

What American actors would do justice as the Doctor?

That's like asking for an American James Bond.

Could we get Nathan Fillion or Neil Patrick Harris to do a stint as The Doctor? Especially the latter.
