  • Attack on Titan and Too Much Whining

So the popular anime Attack on Titan is on Netflix, and we're finally catching up on it.

Tonight we calculated that between the endless recaps, opening and ending themes, and the preview, there remains 17 minutes of actual show.

At least 5 minutes of these 17 will be taken up by people thinking about the decisions they are faced with, and what decision they should make, and remembering their entire fucking lives up to this point, and agonizing over whether they are even worthy to make these decisions, and maybe they should just die but they're scared, etc.

    Holy inefficient storytelling, Batman!

Seriously, kids. Die, or don't. Just STFU already.

It's a tribute to how interesting the concept of the show is that I'm still putting up with it. I have very little patience for inefficient storytelling. I have been known to skip large sections of novels because the characters won't fucking shut up about every stream-of-consciousness thought that comes into their heads. I'm all for a paragraph of introspection. NOT PAGES OF IT.

Ain't nobody got time for that (especially when there's a 30-foot Titan RIGHT BEHIND YOU!).

And my small group of friends called me crazy for FF'ing through so many sections. It isn't just Attack, I think I've only seen three series so far that DONT do that endless recap.

Consider yourself lucky, I watched it as it was airing. -.-

There's even a recap episode in there. I assume they needed to save money for the big fight scenes somehow.

So they took pages from DragonBall Z then?

Going on about what people are thinking can work well in books. TV, not so much.

Even n books there is a limit though. I recall skipping large chunks of Steven Erikson's Gardens of the Moon because the characters would not stop analyzing every single even that happened to them. The longest one I remember was 3 whole freaking pages!

My husband pointed out that they drag out anime so as not to catch up to the manga. I know why they make series based on unfinished manga (MONEY!) but it does not serve the story at all.

Gravekeeper, the next episode we're going to see looks to be the recap. I hate those because they always add around 10 seconds of new information so you pretty much have to sit through the damned thing.

That's one (of many) reasons I love Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex. No recaps, no whining, no endless debate about whether anyone was worthy etc. Shit got done.

I did this with large sections of the Amber series from Zelazny. He had a habit of describing traveling through shadow for pages and pages for no good reason. The first time, it was interesting. The second time, it was kind of ok. The 10th time, though, and I was beyond over it.

I skipped it completely and missed nothing. Though now that I look at the episode list for AoT on Netflix the recap episode isn't there ( It's episode 13.5 "Since That Day" ).

So you're not in recap land, just flashback hell.

No one beats the master: Robert Jordan. Two pages of describing clothing and hand wringing every other chapter. -.-

Did you read the big Amber collection Andara? I read it in the original little paperbacks and didn't find it so onerous, although I can see reading it straight through would do that to you!

Gravekeeper- Thank you! Good to know I won't have to endure it.

david weber three pages of history on every piece of technology ever.

I like attack on titan personally though I find it loses something when certain things show up later. The thing I really like is that the show takes itself seriously it doesn't waste time on comic relief. I like anime but so many times I feel like I'm watching the same anime over and over again because they have to derail to focus on some silly stupid thing that to me adds nothing to the show.

At least that's information and not braid tugging, skirt smoothing, harumphing, arm crossing or ear boxing threats. While the three male leads all wish they were as good with women as they think each other is. >.>

Seems like they were really concerned about catching up to the manga too fast. Seeing as they had episode 13.5 "We need to take this week off". Which was straight up an extra episode.

I tried to like David Weber, but the technology porn did me in! It was a shame as I really liked Honor as a character.

Up to episode 15, things are picking up a bit. I have hope!

I swear I have seriously thought of making every 3 books a new file, and going in and deleting stuff to tighten it all up, and shifting all the technoporn to appendices as needed.

Don't worry, the lull in the middle is totally worth the shit hitting the fan in act 3.

what I've started doing is just skipping pages until I see dialogue again and I understood the story just fine. It lead to one of my favourite quotes of mine: if I can skip three pages and understand the story perfectly then those three pages shouldn't have been there.
