  • Abraham-Hicks

To be honest, I'm a bit upset that this got moved into fratching. I didn't mean to create a post that some people would perceive as a religious discussion or start arguing about the topic.

In my opinion, from my understanding, the teachings of the Secret is NOT religious. It's the power of positive thinking...not praying to ugly ass curtains.

Basically, I want what I want and in order to get it, I think positively about it. I imagine myself achieving it, I imagine what life will be like once I achieve it, and I don't doubt that I will gain whatever it is. It's not religious...it's not praying.

    But, whatever.

    Sorry...

Ummm - I'm lacking some context here....

If it's about 'The Secret', there's a thread - in Religion (I think...).

What was the other post on CS?
ZOE: Preacher, don't the Bible got some pretty specific things to say about killing?

SHEPHERD BOOK: Quite specific. It is, however, Somewhat fuzzier on the subject of kneecaps.

There's the thread on CS, Slyt.

As for me, the jury's still out on these things. I've seen evidence they work, but my own skepticism is very hard to get over. It seems like there must be more to it than what these show.

That's just it...even if your skeptical...what can it HURT to think positively? What harm could come if you just truly tuned your thoughts to really believing in what you want?

I mean, I am a very cynical/skeptical person. I am working on changing that. I can grasp this idea. I think positive and positive things happen. What's wrong in believing in what you want.

I did not see the thread on the secret that is already here. I'll have to go and look for it. On the CS board, I was talking about "Abraham-Hicks" which is closely aligned to the secret.

Positive thinking will give you greater confidence, but any mystical aspects of positive thought are, for lack of better terms, bullshit. That is to say, I often try to think positively about goals I have, it keeps my mood up when something unexpected pops up. But I don't expect any mystical power is going to help me in my endeavours. I'm a realist, though I am cynical at times.

I'm a big believer in the power of positive thinking - and positive people are just so much more fun to be around. I've got a friend that's just so....negative, every conversation with her turns into a tirade against some various topic and it's just exhausting.

People don't react to eachother because of what they think. They react to actions, behaviors, etc.
Being happy is likely to make you look happy and through mirror neurons in human brains make others happy. But it has nothing to do with thoughts so much as a form of golden rule. Act the way you want others to act toward you is not a magical think and it will happen.

                Thanks Ped

I'll take this thread into a slightly different direction from the other Secret thread, mostly because the OP was about actually using it, rather than it's validity (which is the other thread...).

Part of the issue I've seen with this is that the back of the head, the stuff that's been rammed in there for all those 'formative' years, takes a hell of a lot to overcome. There's all this negativity that keeps hanging around (in the form of doubts) that just thinking good thoughts isn't going to sweep away overnight. OTOH, if you can get to the point and see where all those negative thoughts came from in the beginning, it makes it a lot easier to change those internal attitudes - it puts those negative thoughts into a context that you weren't aware of before.

But one thing I personally have a big issue with - hope. Hope can really destroy some people, because it stops them from getting up and doing things, or moving on. "Oh, she'll come back, she just needs time to sort things through" can stop someone from getting up and finding someone else (for example). This same hope makes people spend waste tens of thousands of dollars on lotto and poker machines and other forms of gambling, rather than intelligently investing in more pragmatic options - like food and rent.

                  So...Hope is a bad thing?

It's also what keeps cancer patients going to their chemo treatments. It's what keeps me in school. It's the reason for Obama's election. HOPE. The hope for a better tomorrow, a better future. Without the hope that things will somehow get better, what's to stop us all from drinking cyanide Kool-Aid?

Improperly applied, it stops cancer patients from going for chemo treatments because they hope the guy in the impressive building can lay on hands and cure them.

Hope in something that has a chance of success is worthwhile. Hope in the form of blind faith with something untestable is ... placebo, I guess.
