  • The Evil dead Remakes and the Originals lining up

So apparently they are going to connect the whole evil dead series and there's a cameo at the end of the new of bruce campbell. I don't like this. I really enjoyed Evil Dead 2 and AOD as fun silly movies, the new one I've heard is good but extremely gruesome, a very different tone.

Now I have a problem my memory for books movies and images is ridiculous in that I haven't played King's Quest 5 in years but could walk you through how to beat the game step by step from memory, I can remember quotes and stories like nobody's business and this stuff just stays in my head. When I see a horror movie the images just stay there, other people may forget the stuff after a little while but me I'll see it for months afterwards, just random thoughts than out of nowhere gory mutilation in my brain. So I avoid horror movies, So you can probably understand my annoyance at the possibility of these two series interacting.

Bit OT, but high five for KQV. I always preferred VI myself (loved the story references!)

I'm a big fan of the Space Quest series, myself. And, yes, I can also play SQ1, SQ4, and SQ5 entirely in my head.

Anyways, it seems this has been the trend a lot of franchises have been going towards. Movies that had a reputation for having good comic relief, or even some slapstick here and there are being remade into these dark plotlines that rob them of the whimsy they had before.

Sometimes it works, or I at least appreciate what the directors and writers did, such as the latest Batman series, but other times it just goes too far.

        horror geek rant!
the remake has been tied to the original since it was first released. fango did an article on it when it hit dvd. because it's a bit hard to explain, we'll go with ED1, ED2, AoD, and EDR for the new one.

ED1 was very much about not only the gore, but also mindfucks and outright horror. there was little to no humor in it, and even then it was more in the begining. EDR is a sequel within THAT 'verse. they are both very similar in the sense that once the evil starts, things just keep hitting the shit fan over and over, there's no humor breaks to relive the tension. hell if raimi had as much of a budget for ED1 as they do for EDR he probably would have ramped up the gore too.

ED2 was actually a reboot of ED1, creating an alternate reality arch of the series. it dropped some plot points, while adding fucktons more humor and 'breather-breaks' during the film to break up the violence. ED2 continues into the AoD series, and the video games/ comics/ figures/ everything follow in this arch.

more people remember the details of ED2 and AoD rather than ED1. they remember ash for his chainsaw arm and snappy one-liners, s-mart references and "groovy". none of that was from ED1, where he was the scared teen that barely handles shit, constantly panics, loses everyone he gives a shit about and **SPOILER** dies in the end. (does it count as a spoiler if the movie is 30 years old?)

i like EDR because ED1 was my fave film of the series. Don't get me wrong, i adore the hell out of the ED2/AoD arch as well, but when you're looking for an actual horror fix, ED1 followed by EDR is a good combo. if you're gonna rent to watch it, watch those two together and skip ED2/AoD for another time so the storylines make sense.

oh, and the bruce campbell cameo at the end of EDR, while awesome, doesn't really involve the film at all. it's more or less a fanservice nod to ED2/AoD that really serves zero plot purpose.

        /horror geek rant

This thread made me realize that I haven't watched The Evil Dead or Evil Dead 2: Dead by Dawn in years.

Also I'm starting to wonder how Ash explained away his new gauntlet prosthetic to his fellow S-Mart coworkers.

I cant conclusively say if I have seen ED1, as ED2 is as you say, a remake of ED1, maybe I have, it's just that nothing stands out as being from a different film.

Mentioning that he dies in the end should be a flag as to if I've seen it or not, but I guess it all depends on how he died, if the fade to credits was him being possessed I can head cannon that scene into ED2 as it happened there too.

Also the tone change of the movie, I saw ED2 when it first came out on rental but it would be some time till I saw the first one, House 2 I remember re renting god knows how many times, but the first house I cant say I ever saw once.

Maybe my dad was saying "no not seeing that movie, you are too young" but saying that he let me and my brother watch numerous movies that at the time had no home rating, but eventually got rated as 18, EG Shogun Assassin, might have seen one or more of the Hanzo the blade movies round that time too, but looking at stills I cant say for sure as both actors look kinda similar (hell even Diamanda Hagan jokingly called Shogun Assassin's actor by Hanzo's Actor name in her review).

There is one movie that sticks in my mind as an accidental rental, I wanted to see a movie called "my Demon Lover" due to the trailer from a few other rentals, we rented "dream Demon" by mistake (I cant say if I was old enough to rent the movie myself and picked up the wrong title or if my dad did.) was expecting a comedy, got Timothy Spall and Jimmy Nail in heavy make up freaking me out, I watched the movie a few times cos it was good, but those two in possessed make up were a bit too much for me at the time.

Though I prefer that kinda horror to jump scares.

            begin semi off topic Rant(ish)

Remake of Nightmare on Elm Street, he should have been an innocent man lynched under false accusations of kiddy fiddling, if I was falsely accused of that crime and killed for it, you can bet your last breath I will find a way to come back and murder my accusers.

The west should not remake Asian Horror, granted it saves me having to read the screen and missing out on visuals, but the mythos just isn't here, I will begrudge grudge as it was set in Japan, the sequels not so much.
Hell even in one of them (I think it was the American 2 not one of the Japanese ones) I had lost all respect for the 'Virgin Ghost' type of horror, when the head started to rise out of the photo development lab I started riffing (sadly I didn't record any of my rants at that movie) and basically said "Hold the head under water, no let her up for air just enough, now unzip."

Ringu though not the best movie I've seen from Japan or Asia in general, is still better than the remake.

obv. this post will be spoiler ridden.

ED1 was 5 kids going to a cabin in the woods to get away. ash's neurotic sister gets infected because ash's male friend fiddles with necronomicon. from there the infection spreads, and the dying starts. there are no external boogeymen, the only risks are the infected friends themselves. in the end, ash's death is shown simply as the speed-demon rushing up to him and it goes black (if i remember right). it's a plot very mirrored in the remake, with a few changes, but the character 'tropes' are similar.

ed2 was ash and his girl going to the cabin alone, she gets infected because he screws with the necro, and she dies rapidly. he kills her, she comes back, the house is alive. he loses his hand. the cabin-owner's daughter shows up with her partner and their redneck guides. more dying starts. they try to end it with the book, meet darling henrietta, ash gets his saw, the woods come to life and we all do the time warp again, in the end.

ED1 and ED2 are more diffrent than ED1 and EDR.

i will agree on the J and K horror remakes. to us what seems like "just another long-haired ghost" would be comparative to saying "just another red-riding hood tale". it's just different culture monsters.
              goddamn i love k-horror though.

I don't keep tabs on which Asian country a movie comes from, I can recognise Japanese and Korean writing systems, but not read them, but off the top of my head Rpoint, the Korean Ring (more accurate to the book by all accounts) and don't click are the only confirmed Korean horrors I've seen (spell bound and ghost house (I think that was the title of a youtube rip I saw) don't count as they are rom coms with supernatural twists).
Edit: Whispering coridors/stairs (not seen memento mori however it is spelled yet), not sure if they count as horror though, supernatural yes, but it depends on your definition of horror, pretty sure they were Korean not Japanese.

But most share similar mythos to ghosts mosters and legends, that's why I like watching them over western movies, but seeing an American movie using Asian legends in texas, no thank you.

We have made good horror in the past, but now a days its all jumpscare post scream dross.
Give me a company of wolves, American werewolf in London, dream deamon, that reminds me, I need to dig out my DVD of life force, haven't seen that since rental so my copy is still shrink wrapped. I want my horror to be horror not jumpscare popcorn spillers for 15 year olds as they started lowering the gore and language to get more bums on seats, I want my horror to be psychological more than visual, one of the few things blair witch did right was to not show the 'witch'.

I am not sure how to change "house of the Devil", but I found its pace to be too slow that I almost ejected the disc 3 times out of boredom, the pay off was worth it, but it was 60 minutes of slow burn zero tension, I was expecting tension but it was more like watching big brother but with a single occupant just idling their time away. But had they tried to up the stakes it would probably come off as a chased through the house by crazy family TCM knock off and that would piss me off more.

Speaking of which, one of the remake trailers for TCM was just audio of a woman running panting panicking sobbing etc then right at the end the chainsaw.
The trailer got pulled as it shocked audiences, IMO it did its job, a visual trailer would probably be shite, its what your brain sees with the audible stimuli that made it horrific, well I say that, when I saw the trailer I just saw a blank screen, but I could have imagined anything going on should I had been inclined, my visual memories of radio drama's are more vivid than my recollections of real TV shows.

Re the end of ED1, yeah that's the image I remember, but as he got possessed and released at sunrise, I wasn't sure if that scene from ED1 was the end scene I vaguely remembered seeing or just part of the more slapstick ED2

                  from ED2.

also yes we need more werewolf movies. there's actually one coming out soon called Wer that looks decent.
hell we just need more horror movies that aren't torture porn. i miss mindfucks and suspense. probably why i loved Cabin in the Woods so much. i mean, it's a comedy/horror but omg so goood.

Aye outside of porn the only movies I have seen of late that are rated 18 are either Saw, Hostel or littered with swearing that the BBFC deem not suitable for 15 year olds.

The thread about the holocaust movie being rated how it is due to smoking being a theme, TBH if you are too young to see the movie by yourself, maybe you are not mentally mature enough to see a movie on that subject, for all I know they might water it down so it seems like its all going to be all right for the inmates at the end, then again I could be wrong.

I'm not saying it should be shocking for shock's sake, but also it shouldn't be a movie with a feel good vibe.

and I think that's why most horror movies shy from psychological terrors and stick with look at the scary monster and jumpscares as 15 year olds watching popcorn horror on a date might not be in the right mind set for a true head fuck that lingers with you whilst you walk back home from a late night showing.

Most movies once over are just a time killer now, yeah I saw it, yeah it was good or at least OK, but ask me about it in a few months time and I might be at a loss as to what happened. It was the 90's when I last saw Dream Demon and till today had forgotten about it, now I am having images bleed from the recesses of my mind (outside of the creepy look of Auf Wiedersehen, Pet's duo) though having a quick read of the imdb I am not sure if I haven't blended two movies together.

If I remember correctly The Evil Dead is still canon with Evil Dead 2, but due to some weird legal entanglement they couldn't reuse footage so the "flashback" of sorts got trimmed. So, while Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness only have Ash and Linda, technically his sister and friends were still there. I think. It's confusing.

Although the comic book adaption of The Evil Dead nix Ash and his sister's relationship.

If I remember my Anglo Saxon, wouldn't that be the equivalent of calling the movie "Man?"

they may be canon to eachother, that doesn't mean they have to be the same 'verse. after all, how many diffrent marvel 'verse and canons are there? lol.

yeah, wer is a strange name if you wanna get all technical. but i think, in most modern context, wer typically ends with wolf.

That was a tacked on ending because the studio didn't like the original "depressing" ending.

i fully admit.... i actually love the s-mart ending. it's hilarious, works with the running narrative. and, ya know, had to get another Ted Raimi shemp in there.
