Fred Phelps IS a lawyer himself, in fact. I once braved the horrors of their web site and did some reading, and it comes down to this: Yeah, they're attention-getters, but what's scary is that Phelps seems to really believe. Believe what? That every problem in the entire world...

Ignoring him and his ilk is one good suggestion - unfortunately, it's one they're well used to, and they've long since developed ways to drive past almost anyone's ignore filter.

My suggestion is, as it has been every time he's brought up, to laugh at them. Getting angry doesn't do anything - they not only expect it, they desire it. Anger and hatred validate them (in their own eyes, anyway) but people like that cannot abide laughter. They can't stand being laughed at, and can't respond properly to it.

As for Fred Phelps and being ignored...it's somewhat hard to ignore someone no matter how hard you try. Especially if that person tends to be waving signs that say "death to all humans fags"
