Western religions aren't the only ones. Shinto is surprisingly very hostile towards outsiders, in that the extreme form follows the Yamato principle that the Japanese are the purest race and that the Emperor is a god. It's part of what inspired the mindset of Japan during WWII, and justified their actions in Nanking, Bataan and other places. Today, the Japanese are still extremely xenophobic and discriminate, not just against Westerners, but people from other Asian countries.
The term 'Eastern' and 'Western' comes from when the New World wasn't known, making everything in Europe, Africa and the Middle East the 'West' and everything to the east of that area the 'East.'
