Yes, I randomly go out beating Christians and vandalizing churches and randomly vandalizing Christians cars because they had fish stickers on the back"My in-laws are country people and at night you can hear their distinctive howl."

And if I can be blunt, I was born a second class citizen and am still nearly 24 years later a second class citizen, so while I cannot say who isn't doing enough, clearly enough is not being done if in two and a half decades we've moved from being criminals to merely being deviants.
For comparison, our 50 year old president was born as a second class citizen, by the age of three employment discrimination and segregation of him to different schools was outlawed. By the time he was 6 racial restrictions were removed from his right to marry in ALL states. By the time he was 10 the Supreme Court ruled that busing to maintain quasi segregation was not legal. Oh, all the hoopla about being the first African American to run is bullshit, Shirley Chisholm was the first to run (granted unsuccessfully) when the young Mr. Obama was 11. By 22 the Supreme Court decided that organizations that discriminated against people based on race were not eligible for tax exemptions.
So, forgive me if after 24 years all that has been achieved is marriage equality in 5 states, employment discrimination still legal in half the states, and decriminalization in an extremely controversial supreme court ruling doesn't seem like that much. Hell, we're still hated by nearly half the population (if consistent election results are any indication, candidates with the "I hate gays" platform are doing particularly well).
And Daleduke, trust me, if you lived surrounded by constant bigotry and fear, you too would be just as hateful as me. I lost my father to religious bigotry, I lost my dignity and my pride to religious bigotry, I've lost property to religious bigotry, and I've come to terms with the fact that as long as I live in Utah I may very well lose my life to religious bigotry. So forgive me if I have developed my own bigotry against members of a group who worship a God who commands my death (both in old and new testaments there are calls for death to homosexuals, both Leviticus and Romans say I must be put to death and my blood be upon my own hands). Also Mr. Duke, how unreasonable is it to expect my life to actually improve for once? How unreasonable is it to ask after seeing the lives of people thousands of miles made better (in some cases with my help through donations to PACs) to want my life to get better too? Since moving to Utah the ONLY progress to come in this state is that it is now illegal for me to be fired from my place of employment for being gay (as long as I continue to work in one of the 7 cities that have passed those laws)... oh, but I already work for a federal subcontractor and they already have that in their internal policy... so YAY me for getting something that I should have had well before I moved to this state and was granted anyway out of the generosity of my employer and not the primarily conservative christian legislature doing what's right.
eta- HYHYBT, you clearly don't understand the concept of sarcasm. I may hate conservatives, but I will NEVER lower myself to their level of inhumanity.Last edited by smileyeagle1021; 08-22-2010, 10:24 AM."I'm Gar and I'm proud" -slytovhand

OK I admit I stopped reading at this point to post so forgive me if I am duplicating anothers post
I never read the OP linked article, but I read Disney enoguh times
You can wear this as long as no one can see you" is an acceptable accommodation?
problem solved
/crass mode
and before I noticed alot of Disney references, I was going to say that where I worked (A cook-chill catering service, basically like the ready meals you buy to microwave up but not) we had a "hoodie ban" which was pointless but semi relevant.
the ban wasnt re Hoodies in the ASBO, but more they were warm clothing during winter and we didnt have enough fridge coats for the lidding room, that or most were kept in lockers even if they wernt working there that day. So the hood aspect sometimes hung down the back of our white overals and one of the big wigs saw this on a walk around, thus the ban.
"this ban is stupid" says I
"how so?"
"well 90% of our workforce are eastern european, so if they look up the word ban, they will see illigal and it isnt"
"well it isnt illigal"
"but the wording makes it so. I'm flaunting this ban right now did you know that?"
"no"
pulls hood out from overals
"all you had to say to em was "hood in good, hood out baaaaaaaaaaaaaad" and get em to tuck it in"
so if we had someone who had for religious grounds the need to wear anything, as long as its under the work clothes and a hair net is in place s/he is fine, for the head scalf aspect I would argue for some leeway as long as a hair net is properly worn everything is peachy.
and if they argue, one of the guys sometimes wears a balaclava pulled up with the face at the top of his head and a hairnet free "pinapple cut" clear for all to see, not that they do anything about it mind you hes their untouchable goldenboyLast edited by Ginger Tea; 08-23-2010, 07:37 PM.
