It actually saddens me quite a bit... I knew that the church would always make it's political stance known... but I never expected them to actually get involved in an election

now, I understand the church's stance, even if it is one that I'm not sure I agree with, but I personally think this is crossing the line to actually start meddling in state politics.

Elder Bednar makes a good point that tolerance should go both ways and that people should tolerate the church and it's members who believe that marriage should be between a man and a woman and homosexuality is wrong... but they're talking about removing any tolerance of the other side.

And seriously, the comment about how you could feel the love, I'm not feeling it... they may be saying it in a loving way but the words don't sound that loving.

I'm not sure if really there's anything to debate on that, but I needed to vent and I know this type of thread wouldn't be allowed on CS.

to me, the concept that one's religion is supposed to be seperate from one's society seems completely foreign.

Yeah - I get that you need tolerance for everyone, and thus the lowest common denominator needs to be kept as the basis of society.

But to exclude a group's opinions just because it happens to be a religious group?? Weird idea!

well, I don't exclude the opinion... but I shouldn't even be forced to make the decision... the church's own doctrines and covenants

We do not believe it just to mingle religious influence with civil government, whereby one religious society is fostered and another proscribed in its spiritual privileges, and the individual rights of its members, as citizens, denied.

my interpretation on that is that what I consider to be scripture is telling me something comletely different than what the church leadership is telling me... I read that sentence to basically mean that in a vote such as prop 8, sense it affects some citizens spiritual privileges (ie, the ability to get married, which some churches do recognize same sex unions) is something the church should not be getting itself involved in.

That is actually one of the reasons (belief wise) that I have sort of stopped making an effort with the church. Has the church ever taken part in this sort of political thing before?

I like the rest of that tolerance quote....

"If tolerance is the premise, it should go both ways," Bednar said. "There could be sanctions against us for teaching our doctrine."

If church and state is supposed to be separate, how is the allowance for gay marriage in the US going to stop the LDS church from disliking it and speaking out against it even?
