You know to be honest, I'm surprised that they didn't cremate him and do something with his ashes (scatter them, turn them into jewellery etc.)

The reason why I say this is based more on a safety thing. If he's cremated, then we wouldn't have this hoo-ha issue going.

Then again, a number of religions forbid or discourage cremation, so I can see why they would've chosen burial.
