That is not what the Bible says. Yes, it does say in James Chapter 2 that faith without works is dead. However, it also clearly says that likewise, works that are not accompanied by faith are also dead.

And it's not what the Pope said either.

If you take a look you see that Pope Francis actually says that we are all already redeemed by Christ, even atheists. So we all have the capacity to do good. And in doing good, we can all meet on the path to peace.
