  • Young Goodman Brown

Since this is a forum regarding faith, I thought that this story about one person's faith would fit nicely:
    http://www.online-literature.com/poe/158/

TL;DR: this guy is named Young Goodman Brown, and he has a dream where everyone he knew and thought were good and pure were really in league with the Devil, including his wife, Faith.

The reason I like this is because it just proves how weak our own faith really is.

It's pretty deplorable. We all depend on others to be strong for us, yet, we're too lazy or scared to become strong ourselves. So when those "heroes" fail us, we become utterly devastated.

If more of us found inner strength, we would be better able to resist temptation.

Ugh. I can't read Hawthorne. I know his writing style was seen as avant-garde for his time, but now, it just comes across as stilted and uncomfortable.

      And.....????

(For the purposes of fratching we ask that you please provide commentary or an opinion the material to which you are linking. )
      Point to Ponder:

Is it considered irony when someone on an internet forum makes a post that can be considered to look like it was written by a 3rd grade dropout, and they are poking fun of the fact that another person couldn't spell?

Please see my edited post above. I still think the state of our faith, no matter what anyone believes in, is pretty bad.

Why else would the scandal of the Catholic Church be called a scandal? Because we believe that priests are infallible, so when they sin, we are not just let down, we are thrown off a cliff.

We still call it a scandal when politicians do it, and I don't know if anyone thinks that group is infallible.
Faith is about what you do. It's about aspiring to be better and nobler and kinder than you are. It's about making sacrifices for the good of others. - Dresden

Well, the problem occurs when someone on whom we totally rely does something that goes against our beliefs. If our own foundations are strong, we say "that's too bad, but good thing I don't need anyone to reaffirm MY faith or life."

If however, our foundations are shaky, and we need him to strengthen them, then we're in trouble when he screws up.

I studied this story in a second year university English lit class. Hawthorne is not my cup of tea, but I did find the story sort of interesting. I took more as Brown was losing his mind the first time through because I don't always pick up religious themes very well.
