Now, I am not a fan of companies firing employees over something that happened outside of work, but you know what? Fuck this guy. There's something karmic about someone being fired after being a total dick to those who he assumes are unemployed.

Now, I am not a fan of companies firing employees over something that happened outside of work,

I'm not a fan either, but cases like this are why I understand why it happens. Especially in a case like this where he admits he was supposed to be working. That puts a pall on the company.

Too bad about 2 things:

- The term the asshole used was "chimp", and not "monkey".
- One of the protestors wasn't an off-duty librarian.

It would have been interesting to see the jerk's confusion if a protestor had confronted him with "I'm a librarian, and if you were familiar with the work of the late Terry Pratchett you would know that it's a bad idea to call a librarian a monkey".

one thing to note- the guy wasn't supposed to be working- the job has rained out, so he was presumably sent home early. (it makes a difference, since he wasn't actually skipping work, which is what it sounded like)

having said that, it's pretty reasonable in this case to fire him, since the guy was using his job as a weapon, effectively.

Mars, PA, isn't too far away from me. It's mostly rural. However, people like that guy really don't surprise me. Many people in rural SW PA seem to think that we're still stuck in the 1940s, so they act accordingly. Not helping matters, is that fracking is a very sensitive subject around here. Some people want the gas companies on their land because of the financial benefit; others see it as a way of providing jobs. That's why it tends to stir up things up when it gets mentioned. Even so, the guy is a douche, and he should have been fired. If he's that willing to throw around racial slurs "off the clock" what is he like at work?

Hell, he's the one who brought his job into the argument. It's their right to not associate with this jackass.
