A HS teacher left her unlocked phone on her desk for a few minutes while she was speaking with students outside her classroom. some 16 year old male student proceeded to go through her phone and copy off some semi-nude photos the teacher had made for her husband. Student then proceeds to share these photos with a bunch of other students and someone left hard copies of said photos in her school mailbox.

Admin finds out about this and offer the TEACHER the choice of being fired or resigning. NO OTHER options.

Student is only charged with computer crimes (not specified) and aggrevated voyeuroism

A bunch of student have started a petition to have the teacher reinstated. Now has 11000 signatures.

Another one I remember is about a teacher who was fired because she took pictures of her students who had their mouths duct taped shut...even though the teacher didn't do it, the students did so after first borrowing some from the teacher and because the teacher thought it was a fun/silly moment she took a few pics (like you might find in the traditional goofy pics in the yearbook session. Needless to say some busybody saw the pics on her FB and reported it, and I'm sure you can guess what happened next. :P

When you have examples like this, where an otherwise fine teacher can so easily have his/her career/life go down in flames (even though the teacher did nothing really wrong) it makes many young people who might otherwise be interested in teaching and might otherwise make fine educators to decide it's just not worth the risk. And that is just plain sad.

I was going to say it makes a kind of sense for her to lose her job despite her doing nothing seriously wrong (anybody can walk off without locking their phone) because of potential effects on the classroom... but then I read the superintendent's version of events, which is completely unbelievable.

with the teacher story: unless the nude photos were taken at school, then yeah, it's as bit harsh firing her for it. I could possibly seeing warning the teacher- it's fairly stupid to have nude photos on a phone taken to school- but not firing her.

And apparently, she was fired for being in an adjoining room, not the hallway, when the incident occurred. I can think of two possibilities of why she might be in said room. 1. an incident was staged in said room by the student that copied the images off her phone 2. she saw an unrelated incident in the adjoining room, and went to sort it out.

In short, while it might have been worth looking into the precise circumstances of what went on, firing her is disproportionate.
