It started back in the 1890's and has been going strong for years and years. It just wasn't so blatant until the past couple of years, I believe.

I think that's why there are so many newspapers that are "in trouble". Their readers woke up and decided what they had to offer is not what they want and millions ended their subscription.

Tanasi - where did you find out about the people working for a $1 and deferring their wages until a later date? I'd love to read that myself.
I wish I saw your question before today but.... What I read was a letter-to-the-editor from an AIG upper-mid-level exec and she said that her husband and several other execs (both above and below her husband) agreed to work for $1 and defer their salary to a later date. When her hagness (Pelosi) and minions decided to hit the execs with a very large tax this woman's husband just signed his check back over and told AIG, Pelosi et al. to go fuck themselves. He was done with them. Since it's been several months since I read this I don't remember where I read it but I'm sure it was a link from the DrudgeReport to a local NY paper.
Perhaps the congress critter's and exec branch's salary ought be tied directly to the economy and unemployment rate. They only get paid in good times and will owe money back to the country in bad times. If they're going to reap the rewards then they also bear some of the burden.
Cry Havoc and let slip the marsupials of war!!!
