But why only in this regard? If that is really a legitimate plan, then why doesn't the government mandate other obvious laws?
I just don't like the nanny state mentality no matter how many lives it would save. Freedom comes with a cost.

Well right there... why doesn't the government make motorcycles illegal? That would save countless lives with only a minimum of freedom loss.

Okay, okay... I admit I was horribly wrong on the thrown from the car event.
Call off your dogs. They're ruining my pant legs.
I know a family where the only one that needed to surgery was the one that wore his seatbelt. Anecdotal, but "you" did it first.

First thing, Flyn. Multi-quote. Start using it. It's annoying to continually need to merge related posts of yours. It's the quotation mark with the plus sign.

Because there's a difference between making an activity as safe as possible, and an activity being inherently unsafe. Inherently unsafe activity: punching a shark. Making an activity as safe as possible: wearing lifejackets on a motorboat.

To make that more clear: driving a motorcycle is safe. Crashing a motorcycle is dangerous. Since we can't make a vehicle that's impossible to crash, we make crashing as safe as possible. After all, if we banned motorcycles, we'd need to ban any human-driven vehicle.
Any comment I make should not be taken as an absolute, unless I say it should be. Even this one.

How do I do that? And what does that do exactly?

Riding a crotch rocket is inherently dangerous. Bicycles don't go 50 miles an hour and usually have specific bike lanes, so they aren't in the same danger league as motorcycles.

And, just to be more nitpicky.. and only slightly amusing... if you are getting attacked by a shark, the best thing you can do is give it a good punch in the nose... they're not used to anything fighting back like that.

                  So... BlaqueSharkKatt???
ZOE: Preacher, don't the Bible got some pretty specific things to say about killing?

SHEPHERD BOOK: Quite specific. It is, however, Somewhat fuzzier on the subject of kneecaps.

                            Talk about thread drift.

I'm sorry, but bicycling CAN BE as dangerous as motorcycling, making helmets a good idea, though they won't do everything. I say this because plenty of drivers despise cyclists and will take any opportunity to breeze right past, making them swerve, or slam on the brakes hoping they'll rear-end them. And I personally know a few of these. They think cyclists rude road-hogs, so become exactly that in order to revenge themselves. If you ride a bike, beware that if you hit the sidewalks, the pedestrians hate you. If you hit the bike paths, the joggers hate you. If you ride the street, even if you obey all the laws of same, the car-drivers hate you. And they won't hesitate to show it sometimes. Even if you ride in the street's bike lane, watch out!

Not to derail, but as for helmets, I had an ex-BF who never wore one while motorcycling He insisted that, if it was his time to die, a helmet wouldn't save him. I refuse to believe that, at the very least, it wouldn't soak SOME damage - I don't think they'd stay this popular and still be 100% useless.

As for not wearing seat belts, the few people I've met who didn't wear them, did so BECAUSE they were required, specifically as an act of rebellion against "the man's" supposed oppressiveness. If that isn't a poor reason, I don't know what is... I just don't see it as a big deal to just put the darn thing on JUST IN CASE it helps (which I believe it does).
