  • Check it out - TSA Employees Caught Stealing

    http://gizmodo.com/5315365/tsa-uses-...laptop-thieves

I figured this might start an argument over whether or not we should have TSA services... so i'm posting it here

Anyway... TSA themselves ran some decoy luggage through and someone with sticky fingers tried to steal the laptop and got busted.

At least they're policing their employees, I suppose. I tend to not check stuff that I'm going to miss anyways.

This isn't the first arrest of TSA employees I have heard of. There was a theft ring in Phoenix Sky Harbor in the summer of 2007 that was exposed. The thing is that there are good workers and bad workers. This is also the reason I don't put electronics and jewelry in my checked bags. You never know what will be missing.

Great. I'm two days, six hours and twelve minutes away from my flight. And now this? Why?

Could be worse. Night before my first ever flight There was a show on.

            It dealt with airplane crashes.

And put a spare pair of undies in your carry on just in case your checked luggage gets lost </mom>

                I always do that too!

I've never had anything stolen while flying (and I've flown quite a bit in the last year, seeing as before I moved in with my boyfriend, we'd fly to see each other ever other month or so) but I have had several suitcases ruined, either by TSA or just the luggage packers in general. They are literally falling apart and bits of the plastic trimming have cracked and crumbled and exposed the inside of the suitcase when it's closed.

My mom felt the need to tell me that an airplane from one of the airports I'll be at had a hole blow open from the roof of the plane immediately after takeoff. I don't know why she'd tell me this.

I remember flying to Florida for a school trip with my orchestra. I saw my cello in its 15 lb case go flying though the air and land in the luggage carriage. I freaked out and wanted off the plane to check it. Luckily the case worked and nothing was damaged.

When I last flew, I made sure to keep all my precious valuable, a.k.a. gaming books with me, and only put minor inconsequentials like clothing in my checked baggage.

This is why all my valuables (cellphone, gameboy, camera, laptop) go in carry on. At least they're trying to monitor employees for any theft.

A Geek Squad employee was caught stealing components from computers brought in for service and replacing them with broken or sub-par ones. Should we have computer repair services?

That's exactly what your post is sounding like. An incident of finding a thief in any job does not mean that job should necessarily be eliminated.

I don't think that was the point of the post. I think PepperElf thought it might start a debate about the extent of security at the airport. No matter what, you have to check your extra bags. You always have. That will never change.

I think she didn't want to see it spring into a debate about security and have the thread closed at CS. We could start a thread about that, too I suppose.

I think it's good they are trying to nab thieves in the baggage check. I never checked any valuable items even before we had the TSA crap. I never trusted that my bag would make it back in one piece, or that it may never even make it, or that some baggage checker might not decide to go though and grab stuff out of it, or that someone shady might get to my bag before me (maybe they don't even work for the airport).

There's a million and one ways something could get stolen or go missing with a checked bag- ragardless of TSA security measures. I choose not to chance losing something valuable.

As should everyone. But sometimes that just isn't an option, because of needing to move too much to carry onto the plane.
