I was always a tanned goth....the sun just loved me, lol.

I have noticed I am more attracted to darker skinned mates, .apparently S.American/German mixes ( I mean nothing offensive about this....I just realized that my longest 'ships fit that pattern)

I like really most pale tones.
I like that mocha that comes from mixed parentage.
I like any tone that accompanies freckles.
      Those are just my preferences.
The only kinds I don't like are:
dark chocolate black. That just reminds me of baker's chocolate. Blech.
mixed parentage grey. Apparently not everyone has seen this sad result.
and greenish olive. My mom looks like an orc when she bruises.

I wasn't necessarily targeting my post at you, or the fact that you tan. I brought up tanning because many people do have a certain look they are aiming for, or a skin tone they admire, and so they do certain things to achieve that look (i.e. tanning, or skin bleaching). My point was that some people get so hung up on an ideal that they would jeopardize their health to reach it. What you do is your own business, but my thoughts in my previous post were triggered by the question "What skin color is the prettiest?" not "OMG Blas tans, I must target her and tell her what a bad idea that is!"

I would imagine, in a thread about skin color (and the thread title is listed as a "debate" which implies to me that some people will disagree with one another on something), the ways in which people go about trying to change their skin tone is going to come up. If that is off topic, then I apologize, and moderators can delete my previous post. Regardless, I wasn't trying to call you out on tanning.

We won't be deleting your post, because you did nothing wrong. You simply came up with a debate point that the OP hadn't considered might arise. But that's how it goes around here.

What skin tones someone may find prettiest may well be related to the dangers of tanning, since some people don't consider tanned skin to be healthy-looking.

To be fair, some people use tanning beds to achieve a base tan that prevents them from reacting to natural sunlight. My trainer does this, she's quite fair and breaks out in a rash if she hasn't been able to spend a few minutes under UV beds before we see the sun again.

As for myself, I really don't care what color someone's skin is, as long as they take reasonable care of it. The only color I don't really care for is mostly-dead grey, and that's just because it reminds me of my own mortality.

Sounds like your trainer is suffering from tanning addiction. I'd hope she sees a dermatologist in the future.

Anyone who is friends with me on Facebook can see that I don't look like an Oompa Loompa, that I don't look orange.....and add to it that this has been one of the most pathetic excuses for a summer in 60some years, obviously I'm nowhere near as dark as I could be if I were mixing the real sun with my tanning regimen.

I don't think I looked awful when I had pale skin. And I was literally as white as the wall, so white you could see all the veins in my arms....but I was so limited as to colors to wear that didn't wash me out or bring out how horribly white I was. I prefer myself darker.
Hey if someone wants to tan besides the risk of skin cancer, that's their choice. I just feel people should be informed that they're setting themselves up for that.

I wish I had the time/money to tan

I like darker skin on ME, but on the opposite sex I don't really care.

I could tan if I wanted to, but I prefer to stay pale. I wear sunblock all the time to stop tanning. I wear a lot of black, as well as Gothic style clothes; I just happen to like my look and my boyf likes it, too.

As for skin colour, I'm not bothered; good looks come in any colour. One of my male mates is black and is super hot; I always tell him that if he was single and I was single, I would so jump his bones.
"Oh wow, I can't believe how stupid I used to be and you still are."

Actually the tanning was suggested by her dermatologist, and she only has to do a few sessions at the beginning of the sunny season. A few minutes for a few sessions does not an addiction make.

                    This is what she has.

Why would you assume that people are ignorant of that and need you to swoop in and educate them?

I am partial to the color that is lighter than the typical black/white mixed person and darker than the typical Greek/Italian.

If they're educated about it fine, I'm trying to see that the people who aren't knowledgeable about it don't commit themselves to a practice that could end their lives.

Chances are people know. In any case, I'm more likely to die on my commute to work, fall off my horse and break my neck, or any other number of daily activities that put me at potential risk of harm or death.
If people want to do an activity that can harm themselves, as long as it harms only themselves, then more power to them. If they want to do a legal activity that could potentially harm themselves or others and take steps to mitigate that harm, go for it.

Ah, but as was pointed out in the obesity thread, the treatment of skin diseases causes health insurance rates to go up, therefore affecting me.

Crap argument, I know, and I don't agree with it. But there it is.

I didn't argue that point so I'm not going to defend it on way or another.

That argument doesn't even work here in the U.S. with no real national health care.
