No, most of the rest are too inactive for the amount they do eat, sorry to have to burden you with this reality but as AFP said "Regardless, no one is above the first law of thermodynamics"

Look this isn't purely an issue of thermodynamics, everyone is born with a different metabolism, most people will not be thin if they don't spend every day in a gym, and that simply isn't possible for everyone.

I am planning on exercising, but I'm almost positive it won't end up in a flat stomach, unfortunately this would mean I'd still be prey to the same type of prejudice people who don't exercise would face. There is a point where you tend to say, why does it matter when it's not going to change people's view of me.

I'm still going to try though.

Not really, I don't spend every day at the gym and I'm losing weight and although people may have different metabolisms, the fact remains that of there is a calorie deficit people will lose weight, the difference in metabolism just means that while person A may need 2000 Cl a day, person B may only need 1000 a day for the exact same day.

Most people I know are thin, and none of them goes to a gym.

          1000 calories a day?

That sounds ridiculously low to me.

Low, but probably possible. Small person, low metabolism, desk job, AC running to maintain temps.

1200 calories per day is the lowest I've ever heard recommmended for adults, and that's for very short females. That meets basic metabolic requirements: keep your heart beating, your brain working, etc.

It might just be me, but I want my body to be capable of handling more than the basic abilties to function.

Well, of course. You need to be able to work, shop, go out, live your life. 1200 calories a day is for elderly, mostly bed-ridden people. No one here is suggesting you eat 1200 calories a day.

Well, I do recall the first and last time I tried Jenny Craig, where they put me on a starvation diet of 1200 calories, I couldn't move. But hey, as long as it makes me thin, right?

Starvation diets are rarely a good idea....most I have heard to lose weight is cut your daily intake by 500 cals a day, and of course, get some exercise. Of course, people can find other information out there.

Personally I take in about 1300-1500 in the weekdays, more (and uncounted) in the weekends. Besides just daily living burning, my exercise burns about 400 cals. When I get get good hikes in, I obviously can burn a great deal more.

I've always been of the opinion that diet is for losing weight, and exercise if for health. Either way, good for you. Don't let daily let downs stop you from what you want to do.
You can rarely change others' views about anything. I know it's hard to ignore loud idiots, but everyone of us have had to deal with them about something.

Yup, it's just when those loud idiots make health policies, then that's trouble you can't ignore.

For 1 pound to be lost, 3500 calories must be cut out in a week, so yes, 500 calories a day is about right. (Thank you personal health and obesity seminar I just finished taking over the summer) seriously, 3500 calories = 1 pound. Holy frak. No wonder my cousin lost so much weight just by eliminating Starbucks frappuccinos from her daily routine. There's 500 calories, right there.

Kind of boggled my mind when I read that in the textbook.

But considering I make a meal out of one, that makes it ok, right?

I kid. Sorta. I've done it before, though. lol
