Is asking for Zip Codes "too personal"?

    I've seen tales on CS where the register is able to tell invalid codes, so you can't always make something up, and if marketing has their say, there won't BE a skip key. That pretty much just leaves inputting the store's zip. But to come up with a situation, what if the store is in a commercial zip code, where there's little to no people living, just working? Putting in the store's is going to get suspicious eventually. Should the employee risk disciplinary action for you, or what would your actions be? (Honest "what if" question, not "you're mean" or anything)

    And I agree that the idea is shit, but the fact of it is, it can and does happen that people get in trouble because management is retarded for this kind of stuff, and I'd stop shopping there, and might not even complete that purchase.

      If I knew that was the case, I'd speak to the managment and let them know why I was not going to be spending any more money with them. A company that holds it's own employees hostage to try and get me to comply with a practice I find offensive is not one I want to do business with.

      The clerk has absolutely zero power to get me give out information. None. Companies that discipline employees for something completely out of their control need to go under, and quickly.

      Needless to say, though, I still won't give any info like that out. A policy that stupid will hurt the company in the long run. I'm sticking to my guns.

      And here's something else I just considered: I can't generally remember sequencial numbers. I don't know my own cell number, nor my husband's. I know my home number and my own zip after a very long time and after lots of effort. Sometimes I can't remember those numbers to this day (tiredness, stress, etc.) When I first moved, I didn't know those numbers for a long time. Why should I be put on the spot like that in public?
