I've seen and heard this and when it was published on the local paper website....my first reaction was at the sheer number of comments. First article had 450, second article had about 150 and the last one didnt have the option for comments open.

I'll try and sum up best what the afterfall was:

    1) His show was taken off the air indefinitely. (not sure what's gonna happen to his radio partner, she hasn't copped any flack for it surprisingly)
    2) He's been sacked as a judge from Australian Idol. (he'll still be in the audition sequences up until about halfway through the Top 100 as far as I know)
    3) Several company sponsors have withdrawn their advertising and the like from the radio stations in question.
    4) One of the stations in Sydney has had a bomb threat. http://www.news.com.au/adelaidenow/s...012985,00.html

Whether or not it's related I can't say.

Some of the comments on all three though swing between blaming the mother, the producers, Kyle and today, one of them blamed Kyle's partner for the stunt. It's been blown out of proportion I think.

I agree it's been blown way out of proportion. People are too sensitive these days IMO.

People should not care about a 12 year old having to recall being raped? That's being too sensitive?

No, calling for the head of a guy who stumbled upon it is too sensitive. In what way is it a reasonable response to get a guy fired because he came upon a subject way over his head?
Any comment I make should not be taken as an absolute, unless I say it should be. Even this one.

ITA BroomJockey, yes what he said was insensitive; but, the topic that came up was unexpected and he reacted bady in that split second and then later apologized.

No one said that people shouldn't care; but, the guy should not have been fired for what was essentially a slip of the tongue in the midst of and uncomfortably awkward situation.

So, I still stand by my statement that people are overreacting and being way too sensitive in this case.

And quite frankly, what mother would allow her child to be trotted out like that? "Here, honey, let's just take this lie detector test and find out a few things about you!"

I kinda agree. While it was a bad thing to say I think the guy just got stunned from the statement and blurted out stupidity. But regardless I think there should be some punishment for it. I mean I completely understand sponsors leaving, probably some kind of suspension, but not firing.

I could agree with that. I'd also think maybe some better vetting of show ideas would be in order.

But at the same time ya never know when even a good idea would turn horribly wrong. I think another thing to consider is live shows. I mean at least have say 15 minutes or something incase something like that gets blurted out they can cut the show off.

                      Ok... couple of things..

As Fireheart has mentioned, the show got taken off air 'indefinitely'... currently, there's talk that it'll be back on shortly... but with differences (which I will presume mean, maybe watch the stunts they pull!)

His partner didn't cop flack, cos she didn't say anything stupid... and because it was her who pulled the plug on the stunt.

Mum wanted to know what her 14 year old was up to.... parents are like that... there isn't (unfortunately) any particular non-biological prerequisites for being a parent... so even the stupid are allowed to breed.. let's also remember, girl had the option of not being there, and not taking part... she obviously had something to prove as well (given the "I've already told you, but you don't want to believe me" sort of line...)

What I am a little surprised about, radio stations have about an 8 second cut out... you can hear the delay if you ring in for those... what you hear on the phone comes out the speakers a bit later... so the producer could have cut it at any time!
ZOE: Preacher, don't the Bible got some pretty specific things to say about killing?

SHEPHERD BOOK: Quite specific. It is, however, Somewhat fuzzier on the subject of kneecaps.

I personally think his asking a freaking 14 year old girl about sex was pretty over the top. In fact, we can stop right there, I'd like to see the innappriate prick fired on that alone. Who does that? 14 years old and he's asking her...in front of her mother, no less, about sex? Seriously?

So I guess nobody needs to be particularly suprised that his second question was even worse. The guy's criminally stupid.

If I was the kid's mother, I would have gone ballistic on the guy.

I don't think he is criminally stupid or even stupid. The mother should have known or had a suspicion of the kind of questions that were going to be asked on a radio show that is supposed to tell if someone is telling the truth or not. The mother wanted to know what her daughter was lying about, if she should go ballistic on anyone, she should start with herself and no one else IMO.

It was at the mothers insistance that he asked the question, it was her idea, she wanted to know the sexual history of her daughter, and she was also aware that her daughter had been raped.
