  • Adoption Ad sends picture of child to his own mother

Mom finds that an adoption ad on Craigslist is using a picture of her child to lure adoptees

The mom thinks the person running the ad found a picture of her son on her blog. She has now made it private.

I remember hearing a story, about a family that found out through a friend that lived in another country, that a company there used their Christmas family photo from the internet for a billboard.

I think this "adoption agency" is being investigated for fraud. The article I read stated that they cannot find the operators of this agency.

sounds like America Forever in Utah... which got in trouble for using the picture of an interracial gay couple without the couple's permission... well, that and the fact that it was terrible editing and the fact that it was extremely homophobic... but sadly bad editing isn't illegal and homophobia is protected by the constitution (which though I do support... if I start telling other people what they can't say they will then be able to tell me what I can't say).

Hate speech for some things is illegal. Discrimination based on race or religion is illegal. We just need to add, "We really mean it this time." to the law to protect gays.

Hate speech is only illegal when it starts violent activites or riots. I can say "Jains are fucking stupidheads who worship bugs and should be forced back to India." I can't say "Jains are stupidheads who worship bugs; let's go shoot them and ship them back to India" while aiming my gun at the nearest Jain.

Dammit, we really need the Rule #1 smiley here!

But still....who came up with the brilliant idea of putting adoptions up on Craigslist? Aren't they owned by eBay?

Jainists worship all life. They are supposed to want to eventually starve to death so they don't accidentally kill by their very existance. Worshiping bugs is one of those partial truths.
The first sounds like hate speech to me. It's full of hate and even suggests a means of attacking them through kidnapping and exportation.
The second is menacing and making death threats, breaking a whole host of other more serious laws.

There was a case in Canada that's an excellent parallel that says it WAS hate speech. A bunch of Romani refugees were staying in a hotel in Vancouver (I think), and protesters were saying that all Gypsies should be sent back to where they came from. It was held that since it focused on a particular, identifiable group, incited hatred (some of the signs and shouting was pretty nasty), then it wasn't free speech, it was hate speech and thus illegal.
Any comment I make should not be taken as an absolute, unless I say it should be. Even this one.
