I still think my experiences are odd. I was far more afraid of my mother's hand than my father's switch. My mom struck in the moment in anger, while my dad waited a moment to "cut" the switch. It was obvious that it literally hurt my dad more than it hurt me.
Today my dad would be arrested, while my mom would only be disciplined.

Since we can't really judge with all the facts, I say that hitting children over the age of say 4 in any way to cause pain or form visible injuries should be illegal.

I wish the those of opposing views would stop trying to strawman my view into one of no discipline at all.
I don't say that they just love abusing kids. I know that they believe that thier way is the best way. We can disagree without name calling.

Here's an update on this story:

This guy has been sentenced to one year in jail for hitting that kid.

Roger Stephens, who captured national headlines last August after repeatedly slapping a 2-year-old at a Stone Mountain Wal-Mart, was sentenced to one year in jail Tuesday following a brief bench trial in Gwinnett County.

"He's absolutely amazed this incident took on such Goliath proportions," Sliz said. "He never in his wildest imagination believed it would mushroom into this."

Well he got what he deserved.

But really...he was actually SURPRISED about all of this? Common sense ain't so common these days, it would seem.

No it's not but that is besides the point. Check the age. Kids having rights is a fairly new concept. When he was growing up you could smack the shit out of a kid and the kid had no right to complain s/he was just a kid after all what do they matter.

Heck my mom got spanked in school when she was a kid and it was considered ok.

Yeah, well maybe. But to me "too old to know better" doesn't strike me as a particularly sound excuse for doing something wrong. None of of us exists in a vacuum and even people who've been around a bit, unless they live in some kind of a cave, should have enough awareness of the world around them to know that some things just aren't as acceptable as they were "back in the day". Maybe if they're senile or suffering from dementia, but otherwise it just doesn't wash with me.

Your right it's not just like I should judge people for blaming someone for their own behavior. However it can be harder for them to change behavior at the same time.

Look at women who live in a country, USA for example, that says they are equal to men yet consider themselves to be the property of their husbands because that is the culture they grew up in.
