Even if you get faster than light travel, as stated, the universe is friggin huge it'd still take years to travel vast vast distances.

Even at maximum warp it was going to take them 70 years to get from the delta quadrant to the alpha quadrant, and that's just 1 galaxy.

Minus the sexy and I'm wearing shoes.

If you can go FTL, then you can travel through time, and that's just a big headache.

See I'd like to think if there's a alien race out there that they've come up with something better than ftl drives. Whether it's jump gates, wormholes, etc.

Probably the best way would be to shift 4th dimensionally. You hop up a dimension, and there's no distances to cross in the basic 3, according to current theory. Just *pop* up, *pop* down, and you're where you want to be.
Any comment I make should not be taken as an absolute, unless I say it should be. Even this one.

You can hope that magic exists all you want. Just don't call it science please.

Wormholes exist, and they are science. Seriously, take off your "I'm so right" blinders, dude.

Yes, they are theorized to exist, but they collapse if anything even electromagnetic information starts to go through them.
So take off your overly hopeful blinders.

But again advanced civilization might have the way around it. I don't think any of it is "magic" because in the reality we ourselves are changing so fast, and there are theories being proven all the time. So while wormholes are just theory now they may be fact at some point.

Hard to take off what I don't have on. What I DO have on is the "We thought the sky was an inverted bowl, and solid, then we thought it a veil separating us from heaven, then we thought everything revolved around us, then we thought our planet was unique, but now we know space is nearly infinite, we are spinning through the universe, and planets similar to ours exist, so not only does 'knowing we're alone in the universe but if we weren't there would be no way to reach us' sound arrogant and possibly the most self-centred, homocentric thought since the universe revolves around us, but is more than able to be the next thought to join the previous section of the list" blinders.

Granted, not as pithy as yours, but a position that acknowledges my pathetically small place in the universe, and the fact that humans are proven wrong about what we "know" every day. Seriously, since you're not the most intelligent being in the universe, saying anything is impossible is staggeringly arrogant.

                        Quoted for truth.

We as humans are extremely limited in our understanding of reality due to our finite senses. We can only take in so much data, and our brains can only process so much. We are forced to live in a three-dimensional universe (four including time).

I think it's silly to assume that if we can't fathom something, it can't be so. We're ants in the greater scheme of things.

Doing what to our science is impossible is magic.
Most of you posters may like that, but I don't believe in magic unless and until I am faced with insurmountable evidence.
I won't cast aspersions about your faith based beliefs, but please do not call it science, or rational.

Computers are magic, cars are magic, the telephone is magic, they were impossible to science 200-300 years ago, so we must've started using magic instead.

Doing what scientific theory says is impossible isn't magic, it's progress.

Exactly. Humans have an very small fraction of the understanding most seem to think we do. We are standing on a small speck of sand, seeing only it, and thinking we know what the beach looks like. IF the estimates of the universe are even close to being accurate..we don't see 3% of it, maybe .00003% of it..if we are lucky. We ASSUME that the laws of physics apply equally to everywhere in the known universe, or our limited understanding of those physics at least.

I also agree that something coming along that science didn't consider before is not magic. Sure it doesn't happen overnight, but advances are being made all the time. Some people think 'science' is infallible. It is only a tool, and a tool is only as good as it's user.

Now don't get me wrong, I believe that we have to go on what we know currently. However, we should not discount that things exsist that science can not explain or has no governing over. Now on to the actual topic.

UFO's. Well, as one of the people who have seen something that can be classified as such at a distance of about 100 yards..I have to say that they exsist. Since it is a UFO, I can not be certain it was from another planet or not, or that Alien beings were in it or not. I just know it was not any craft I have ever seen before or after. It could have very well been something the military was testing. It was 'saucer' shaped, but again .. that means absolutely zip. No it wasn't dark, it was broad daylight..nothing obstructing my view of said object.

For some reason I get the mental image of the knights from army of darkness trying to kill the "beast" aka the car.

But I think Nyoibo is totally right and honestly calling unknown science "magic" is just insane. I mean if you wanted to call it science fiction then fine, but it's not magic. Calling unknown science magic is almost dark ages when they used to think people with epilepsy were "possessed by demons".

At least with science fiction some scifi has been proven real or created. I mean let's even look at recent history. In the 70 star trek became a popular show with teleporters on it. Science fiction, but only a could of months ago some scientists teleported molecular structures. Sure it's not people, but it's only at the beginning. FTL drives are science fiction. However supposedly a viable FTL drive design has already been created. It's not a working drive, but again it's only at the beginning. I don't think I need to throw more things that have been created that were once not possible. Scientists have theorized on things for ages, scifi writers have used those theories for over a century to show us what might be in our future. Does it all come true exactly the way they right no, but then again some of this stuff they're still working on.
