No they weren't. There is a difference between what the public can understand, and what is impossible according to proven laws of physics.
People said that breaking the sound barrier was impossible. But even at the time scientists knew that it was just really really hard.
The unknown may still be vast, but we have narrowed down the impossible quite a bit.

If I remember from history class when the Spaniards came over to conquer what is now known as Mexico the indians that were here thought that they were getting shot by sticks of magic, when in reality it was just guns.

But now you say doing what scientific theory says impossible is magic, but worm holes are scientific theory

Why is it so difficult to understand that for this discussion, the term 'magic' is being used as an analogy? It is equating our current knowledge of 'science' to what a vastly more technologically advanced society would have, and comparing it to the 'Dark Ages' where they didn't have 'science' and so anything beyond their immediate understanding was immediately labelled 'magic'.

It's not really that difficult a concept, is it?? (certainly, English should be somewhat easier than quantum mechanics.. yes???)

Flyn... by arguing the way you have, it would appear that you think scientific knowledge and investigation has a finite end point.. there will come a time (hypothetically) where it will be impossible to find out any more, and to advance any further...correct???
ZOE: Preacher, don't the Bible got some pretty specific things to say about killing?

SHEPHERD BOOK: Quite specific. It is, however, Somewhat fuzzier on the subject of kneecaps.
