  • Rush Limbaugh

Do you guys think that Rush is really as racist, sexist, hateful, etc. as many people say he is? It's not hard to find lists of racist/sexist/etc. quotes that Rush has made, but some of his fans claim that those are taken out of context. One person who holds this opinion is Andrew Klavan, an author and political commentator. A few months ago, he challenged "liberals" to take his Rush Limbaugh Challenge. Here's his article.

No. I think he has a job to do and he does it. Controversy = ratings. Ratings = Money. A lot of people are like that. Howard Stern, Glen Beck, etc. They throw enough crud against the wall, something sticks with somebody and they start watching/listening to them. They tell their friends "This guy/girl is a genious!" and those friends start listening/watching..and find some other crud that has stuck to the wall. Not saying that they don't hit on truthful things, but even a broken watch is right twice a day (well not digital ones I guess lol). They will say anything that brings viewers, they have picked a 'side' and will stick with it. But that is just my humble opinion, and I am sure others will disagree.

I can't stand Rush Limblow to be honest. He's a blowhard hypocrite that's more full of shit than a port-o-potty, IMHO.

So Mr. Klavan thought that convincing people to listen to Limbaugh for several hours a day over the course of two days would help his cause. Except now I have less respect for Mr. Klavan than I do for Rush Limbaugh.

Klavan attempts to reach out and change our minds by calling us all "yellow-bellied, lily-livered intellectual coward(s)". Hardcore right-wingers like him wouldn't recognize diplomacy if it punched him in the face.

It's not surprising to me that someone like Andrew Klavan doesn't find Limbaugh's show particularly shocking. However, as someone that doesn't write articles that call my readers names, I do. I have been trapped in a car listening to that blowhard for hours on end. And I find Limbaugh misogynistic, ignorant, small-minded, and hypocritical.

This guy must be kidding! The real "challenge" is to see if you are actually physically capable of listening to that garbage without barfing.

I don't know if you all watch SNL, but this week on "Weekend Update" one of the actors dressed up as the political pundit James Carville and said that "Rush" is a dumb name for him because "the only place he's rushing to is the donut shop" Or something to that equivalent. /immaturity

Klavan's an asshole, and Rush has been doing his job so long I doubt he doesn't buy in to his own rhetoric now. You spout something long enough, you tend to start believing it yourself.
Any comment I make should not be taken as an absolute, unless I say it should be. Even this one.

Don't believe me? Well, then, gird your loins. Gather your courage. Accept the Limbaugh Challenge. See what happens.

              I dare you.

Hmm... I guess I don't have a problem with that statement. I've had personal attacks on my character for not agreeing with something Obama does. I've been called a racist. I'm definitely not a racist. I've been called a fascist for not agreeing with universal health care. These are direct attacks on my character and I don't retaliate by calling someone else names. But, I do get it from both sides. When I support gay-marriage, I get called a fagot. It happens on both sides.

I do agree that a lot of Limbaugh's quotes are taken out of context. Most of you guys have never listened to him, you just hear that he said he wanted Obama to fail.

"If he [Obama] adds Reagan into his mix of Lincoln and FDR, I would want him to succeed. If his version of success is turning America into a socialist society, I want him to fail! Why would I want socialism to succeed?!?"
Bolding is mine, because that's what everyone talked about.

Do I like Rush Limbaugh, nope. I'm not a fan of anyone who is hard-core right or hard-core left. They're too extreme for me. But, I will recognize when someone is taken out of context and then attacked for it. It happens to people here.

Just because it has happened to you doesn't mean it's okay. People calling you names is never debate, it's not intelligent and it does very little to reason people into changing their minds. Idiots are idiots, no matter their political affiliation. Intimidation tactics are never alright.

Also, assuming things about people who don't agree with you doesn't make for good debate tactics. No one here has said anything anything about Rush being an idiot for wanting Obama to fail. You're the first person to bring Obama's name up in this thread. There are plenty of reasons to hate Rush, and most of the people here are smart enough to have researched their dislikes. I find it surprising you choose to say that they haven't put the effort into it.

I love James Carville. Probably one of the smartest political minds out in the media, and his accent is just charming.

                    Ahem.

I used to listen to rush all the time, and used to agree with him. Then I fell off the grid for a while and hadn't heard anything from him, but then I just a year ago or so started listening to him again and he sounded all full of crap. I don't know if he changed, or I did. But it seemed like he used to talk about actual relevent things, like so and so's policy on whatever. The last time I listened to him, he rambled for like twenty minutes on how Obama mispronounced a word or stuttered or something.

                          I honestly have no idea.

He's an entertainer. As such he's after ratings and publicity. Without those he's out of a job.

And with entertainers it's hard to tell which is the person and which is the personality.

So again, I have no idea.
They are never invited to cocktail parties, which is a shame in a way, because I'm pretty sure the world would like them better drunk. -Boozy

No one gets a free pass because they might be considered "entertainers." Political commentators aren't playing a villain the way that a TV and film actor does. One can watch Meryl Streep play a wicked character in a movie without her character's actions affecting the political discourse in America.

If the question is "Does Rush Limbaugh believe the things he says?" then the answer is, "Why does it matter?" There is no difference between a hateful person and someone who spews hate. No difference between a misogynist and someone who promotes a misogynistic agenda.

I suspect that his radio personality reflects his own personal beliefs, and those beliefs reflect his genuine (but misguided) desire to improve America. If indeed he is only spewing this bullshit in exchange for a paycheque, then I believe we can definitively label him an asshole.

Actually, most people in thread admitted to never listening to him. And I know that the media screamed that Rush said he wantes Obama to fail. They took that quote of context. Tell me other wise.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I mentioned the Obama incident as an example of Limbaug being taken out of context.
