Well, here's the thing. Imagine this, I'm sitting in my parent's house, with my old man asleep in the next room, and my old man's shotgun, pistol, and bad temper in the next room, and in the company of a longtime male friend. Straight up good boy, the friend. Never in any kind of trouble. Doesn't even so much as swear.

You wouldn't think that would be a high risk situation, would you?

You'd be wrong. I got fucking attacked. I kid you not.

I take after my old man as far as brutality and ferocity goes. Boy got hurt. He cut his losses and fled. Had I been not able or willing to fight back? I reckon the story would have a different ending.

Old man never found out. Which is why boy is not dead and old man is not in prison.

The problem I have with such statistics is akin to those for child abductions. They include false reports, intentional and otherwise, and custodial interference. But they convey the numbers as if they were all random guys grabbing kids off the street, rather than Mr. Doe not bringing little John back on time to Mrs. Doe.
So I put the 1 in 6 as including everything from false reports, intentional and otherwise, and any sexual asault from butt grabbing to real rape.

I simply refuse to believe these organizations that want to create panic to push thier agendas.

Rape is a horrible and terrible ordeal for anybody to go through, and being cautious is never a bad thing. I do not think it paranoia, as there are date rape drugs out there, and they are out there for a reason. Because people use them. I won't say exactly what I think about the people that do use them, but lets just say that a 'man' is the last thing I would call them (although they might be male..)

A real man does not need an unwilling partner, regardless of if by force; drugs; not knowing better (underage); or trickery. If it is a 'roleplay' (Ie consentual while pretending that it is not) that is your thing, and more power too you. Nothing wrong with trying some new things. If it is actual..there is not punishment bad enough in this world for such.

Now, that being said, here is where I am goinna get myself in trouble. Deep, deep trouble, with the flaming and the people bashing me on the head and shoulders, and the pain and the hurting.

First, statistics can be made to say just about anything. 98% of statistics are misleading, and 25% are made up ;P> I am not saying that these statistics are not accurate, just that ALL statistics should be taken with a grain of salt.

Second in this particular statistic there is a factor not actually considered. False claims. Next day regrets, daddy finds out and they panic, revenge (for a breakup or any number of things). Mind you only a small fraction of the cases would fall into these categories, but there is no way of knowing.

While most people would not do this, the problem is..like sexual harrassment, it is almost impossible to prove innocence. It is one persons word against anothers, and the majority of the time (now) the supposed victim is ALWAYS believed. Somebody, who I know but will remain nameless, filed a coworker rape charge just so they could sue the company and retire a wealthy person. It worked, even though they were never even touched by said person (though they probably will get caught, they brag about it a little too much).

Luckily such things are very very rare (The false rape charges).

No offense, but if you think that, then your imagination sucks. The problem is the "bad enough" punishments tend to be illegal. Though I'm against revenge punishments, I could easily come up with something that you'd think not only bad enough, but overboard.

Oh, I have to agree with Broom here. I'm not a big believer in "revenge punishments" at least as laid down by the government.

But I am a big believer in tire irons, blowtorches, and fire ants. I'm just sayin.

Tire irons, etc are not enough, but yeah I guess it should have read "No LEGAL punishment in this world bad enough."

My preference (for men) would be castration by a dull instrument without any pain medication or such. Should they survive, then their hand cuffed behind them, maybe even a 'sex change operation from the waist down', and then threw into the general population of a prison sans clothing. Yes..that would make me as bad as them, but it would actually be letting them off easy.

For female rapist (yes there are females who rape), I'm not exactly sure...would need something equivilently as horrible .

Now that is just 'normal' rapist, child rapist..hmm I don't know..slowly lowered feet first in a vat of acid? Not enough to actually kill them, death lets them off easy, however.

Hmm wonder if I have a bit too much hate for the Rapist? :P

Of course, one of the best weapons of all is common sense. All the lipgloss testers in the world will not help you if you're not being sensible when you go out. I had this in an email once; it's basically just advice.

                Pubs, Clubs & Parties:

                1. Know your limit. If you feel too drunk too quickly, you are at risk. If a friend looks like she's in a bad way, never leave her alone.
                2. Never accept a drink from a stranger - it could be spiked. If someone offers to buy you a drink, go to the bar with them and take the drink directly from the bar staff.
                3. Don't leave drinks unattended. Choose carefully - a bottled beer or alcopop is harder to spike than a glass of vodka and coke. Avoid punchbowls or jugs of drink.
                4. If your drink looks or tastes suspicious, don't drink it. Remember though, that date rape drugs can be colourless, odourless and tasteless. If you do leave a drink on the bar and come back to it, don't drink it. Order yourself a fresh one instead.
                5. Remember, all drinks can be tampered with, even water, tea and coffee, and soft drinks.

                Using Taxis:

                1. Plan how to get home before you go out. Share a cab with a friend and get out together, if possible.
                2. Don't hail cabs. Keep the number of a reputable taxi firm on your mobile phone. When you book, ask for the driver's name, and the make and colour of his car.
                3. Take black cabs or licenced minicabs - these are approved by the local authority or police and have identity numbers.
                4. When the cab arrives, ask the driver his name and company, who he is collecting, and what address he's expecting to go to. If he can't answer, then don't get in.
                5. Always look for the taxi sign on a minicab. Even if a car looks exactly like a taxi but without the sign, then don't take it. Most taxis have the name and number of their firms accross their cars. Prefer these firms over those with plain cars.
Yeah, I know that American cabs are different from British ones; but do you have unmarked taxis? There's a lot of cases here of men driving cars that look like taxis in order to pick up girls and rape them. That's why there was advice about cabs added in at the end.
"Oh wow, I can't believe how stupid I used to be and you still are."

I dunno about too much hate, but yes, certainly lacking imagination. Acid? Castration with dull instruments? Clichéd and trite.

                  RK's got a better grasp, I think.

I don't think civilized people should indulge in such torture porn thinking.
I don't think it's healthy to indulge such hate.
The point of a justice system should be to help the injured and fix the criminal, not indulge in vengeance.

It's usually worse not to, repression is a bad thing, everyone has feelings of hate at one stage or another and just thinking about things is not harmful. Being civilised is a facade, inside everyone there is a bestial side, anyone who says there isn't is either lying or deluding themselves.

There is something I wanted to say, which I was very hesitant about, because I don't like getting flamed . . . But I finally decided to go ahead and throw myself head first into the fire.

False rape claims are "very very rare," you say.

According to who, exactly? Where are you getting this information from?

A while back, I came across this Op-Ed piece written by Wendy McElroy :

"False Rape Accusations May Be More Common Than Thought"

                              Wendy McElroy notes that :

                              (1) Feminists have often stated that false accusations of rape are rare, accounting for only 2% of all rape claims.
                              (2) Men's rights activists have stated that a significant percentage of rape claims are false, sometimes placing the figure as high as 41%.

Ms. McElroy views both of these claims with a certain amount of skepticism. But she gives greater credibility to a 1996 study published by the U.S. Department of Justice, which notes that, since 1989, in 25% of sexual assault cases referred to the FBI where results could be obtained, DNA testing resulted in the exclusion of the primary suspect.

Wendy McElroy does note a few caveats with that figure, such as the fact that it does not distinguish between accusers who are lying and accusers who are honestly mistaken, and more importantly, they did not indicate that a rape did not occur at all, merely that the specific accused person was innocent.

Ultimately, however, her conclusion was, in her own words, "False accusations are not rare. They are common."

IMPORTANT : Wendy McElroy was not saying that false rape accusations are common in the sense that they make up a majority, or a particularly high percentage, of rape claims.

I believe that she was saying that they are common in that if you multiply 25% by the total number of rape accusations made, you wind up with a lot of innocent men having their reputations irrevocably destroyed for crimes they didn't commit.

I should note something here :

Wendy McElroy has often been described as a "feminist," which might lead some people to assign greater credibility to her when she argues that false rape claims are common (which is definitely not a common feminist position).

However, Ms. McElroy is also known to have supported the cause of the men's rights and father's rights movements. At least one prominent figure in the men's rights movement, Glenn Sacks, has often spoken favorably of Wendy McElroy, and views her as "friendly" to their cause.

So the fact that Wendy McElroy would say something that goes against the typical feminist ideology is not really all that unusual.

And, in any case, this is only one person's view of the subject.

The point I'm making here is this :

There appears to be a very widespread belief that false rape claims are extremely rare. The aforementioned "2%" statistic has been cited many times.

I believe that it would be worthwhile for us to re-examine that belief and ask ourselves where exactly it comes from, what our reasons are for believing it, and whether or not they really stand up to scrutiny.

Because, clearly, there are people who believe that it does not, and we should not simply dismiss them out of hand, on such a serious issue.

I believe that the vast majority of women would never make a false accusation of rape.

I also believe that the vast majority of men would never commit rape.

But the first belief does not automatically mean that false accusations of rape must be rare, any more than the second belief means that the majority of rape charges must be false.
"Well, the good news is that no matter who wins, you all lose."

                              Comment

That is exactly why I believe that a) the accused should be anonymous as well as the accuser up til the verdict and b) if an accuser is proven to be making a false rape claim, then they are to be named and shamed. False rape claims can wreck lives; it's hardly fair that an innocent person be branded with such a terrible accusation for life just cuz some selfish attention seeker flings it out. And a lot of these people have done it over and over again.

Yes, they need psychiatric help, but I don't think that their victims' mental health should be ignored. Read below; an article about a student who even after his aquittal, was still suffering due to the stigma of being accused of rape.
