nope doesn't work that way-is there less theft in countries where you get your hand cut off for stealing-nope. Are there less murders in states with the death penalty for murder-nope quite the opposite actually. And who gets to deliver the punishment, and if the person was actually innocent does that mean the former "criminal" now a victim of crime can then demand the person that punished him/her be punished?

and from what I've found the minimum sentence for sexual assault is 3 years-not 1 year. But it is on a case-by case basis-depending on the heinousness of the crime-if she was under 14 it carries at least a mandatory 10 years in prison.

At least they're all being charged as adults. I hope they get to sit alone in a jail cell for a very very very long time. That poor girl, I can't even imagine the hell she's going through.

            School tightening security...

Wouldn't it be great if they'd actually used the security they had to prevent this from happening? A couple of cameras will not stop anything if the security people are off daydreaming.

Typical. People don't want to spend money to prevent anything, but they'll sure move quick if something happens and there's a public outcry.

18-year-old mother was the only one to call Police to let them know of the rape - she learned about it after her brother came home from the dance and told her what was happening

Article also mentions people took pictures of what was happening (WTF?) and that after she called police, the young woman went up to the school to make sure the police were responding.

                Took pictures?

We're not dealing with the brightest and best here, are we?

"How can I incriminate myself really stupidly? I know, I'll get in a gang rape and take pictures! I like prison food and cellmates called Bubba..."

Criminals are rarely the most logical of people.
This atrocity just goes to show how most humans are just one second away from frenzied baboons.

"When the teenager disappeared, her friends thought she had gone home early."

Uhm wait what? You thought she had come home early you didn't know you didn't oh I don't know have a buddy system like the ones taught since you were kids and you didn't think to check on your friend to make sure?

Yet it is only the school officials who are at fault for this happening and not her friends who shrugged and figured whatever I am too busy having fun to wonder if my friend made it home safely.

I am not in anyway shifting the blame from those who committed the act and I agree the school should be offering more protection for a school function however these friends of hers are not blameless and have no right to be self rightous.

Only if they had any idea that gang rapists frequented the school.
Thinking your friend went home early is not a crime. Buddy systems? Unless you are in a lake or Baghdad, why the hell should you need a posse for protection?

I know, I know. I'm a big assed male and don't know how dangerous the world is to women everywhere.
I'm not meaning that sarcastically. But I don't see that kind of paranoia in my female friends. They are still alive.

In order to avoid drinking and driving, my friends and I will take the shuttle bus from our South Campus to our North Campus to save us a walk. From North Campus, it's a few blocks and there are all the bars. Now, this part of the walk is generally safe. We don't usually take the longer route that is well lit, but since we are in a group, it doesn't really matter. Now, when we are drunk and someone wants to go home earlier, sometimes people make really bad decisions. Like not waiting for someone else to go home. Then, while walking alone, some guy(s) pulls them in an alley, offers them a lift, etc. and either mugs them or assaults them. At one point, we had guys regularly getting mugged by a small group of thugs.

The buddy system pretty much eliminates this from happening.
