  • Swine Flu Shot is TESTED!

Oh I am getting sick and tired of this. Even my mother is driving me up all wall with it.

The swine flu shot has been tested!!!!@@!@!!@!!@!

It is made the same way every other flu shot has been made in the last 15 or so years. If the outbreak happened earlier in the year the current flu shot would of included the most common N1H1 strains.

Reason why the live culture inhaler is out first is because it takes less time to make.

People must be under the impression each vaccine uses some rare exotic ingredient. "N1H1 can only be curred by the sap from the Faro plant" or something like that.

Ok, I will let everyone on the big secret. Flu shots are mostly (like 75%) are made from chicken eggs! They infect chicken eggs with the virus! They let the virus reproduce like crazy. Then they run the egg/flu mixture trough a centrifuge and then separate out the layer the flu viruses will sit in. After that you kill the virus off with some high energy light (ultraviolet) then pack it with binders and preservatives. In fact allot of vaccines are made this way.

Well before my mother starts talking again and I feel the need to rant. This is the magic of a flu shot. You are given broken viruses so your body can learn how to kill the particular proteins that makes up a flu virus. So it doesn't have to do it later with live viruses that are actually attacking and moving about.

The Swine Flu vaccine has not gone under as nearly extensive testing nearly every other vaccine has gone through. This is the problem most people have had. That, and if you get some strange side effect from the vaccine, the government has given the health companies immunity from being sued.

Also, despite the random amount of the chicken eggs you claim are in the shots, there are other chemicals in them. Ethyl mercury is in it. Mercury is a heavy metal. Heavy metals cause heavy metal poisoning which is extremely painful and damaging. It also contains squalene in it which has been linked to causing Gulf War Syndrome.

the WHO (World Health Organization, not the band) calls your mercury fears incorrect.

Ethyl mercury is excreted, and in the system for not even two weeks. What you're thinking of as dangerous is methyl mercury. Further, they say your squaline concerns are based off a piss-poor study.

Doesn't eating obscene amounts of sushi give you a shot at mercury poisoning? The H1N1 vaccination is made in a very similar way to the previous flu vaccinations. The only reason I'm not getting the H1N1 vaccination is because I already had H1N1. I lived... thankfully.

Actually, any kind of fish, but that's because they tend to contain methyl mercury, which is the dangerous stuff. Pollution sucks.

            Thank you, boomjockey.

The "Organic Mercury is bad" argument uses the same philosophy that table salt is bad because it contains Chlorine a highly poisonous gas, and Sodium a highly unstable flammable metal.

As for testing, ever since the process and chemicals used for making Flu vaccine have been approved there is no need for years of testing that people think the shot needs. Nothing changes in the FLU shot year to year other then the dead viruses that go into the vaccine. What we are talking about are microscopic bits or protein. Even then 2800 volunteers in high risk groups (teachers, hospital workers, etc..) are used to test for issues and effectiveness.

I dunno, I'm just GLAD that I'm over 26, and thus not in the "recommended" category for the swine flu shot. It gives me an excuse for not getting the damned thing; I never get flu vaccines.

Nah, you work at a college. You are one of the recommended groups.

As for only methyl mercury being dangerous and not ethyl mercury...NO mercury is healthy for you. Any compound with mercury, the mercury is bad for you. As are lead and other heavy metals.

The levels of danger are completely different things. So ethyl mercury is easier to excrete than methyl mercury. Would you inject ethyl mercury into your blood stream anyway? No. You'd still elevate mercury levels to potentially hazardous levels. What the World Health Organization is trying to get at is that the concentration received of ethyl mercury is so small it is negligent. But to the common person, they hear that some form of mercury will be injected into you and they'll freak out. This is one of the reasons why people freak out.

As my last two sentences went, the common person hears that squalene is accused of causing diseases and deformities so they instantly accept this as truth.

Come on Broom, give me some freaking credit. As chemist who has studied a fair amount of toxicology, I have some idea about various chemicals and looking into them. I also take a good amount of time philosophizing about human nature and generally I don't believe most people are smart enough to see through the media's attempt to get ratings.

Give credit where credit is due. The media outlets have studied long and hard on how best to dupe people.

Sorry to hear that. Was it really bad?

I haven't had H1N1, but I've had regular seasonal flu before. It didn't kill me, but in the midst of it I was almost praying that it would. I couldn't even open my eyes for three days.

Maybe it's just our health center, but they're only giving out shots to those under 24 or with chronic health problems, perhaps because supply is so low and we have so many students (20,000 on main campus). And many of them live in the dorms. I'm not getting one unless I have to, and I shouldn't have to.

Interesting. We had two days here where anyone with a school ID for my school could get a free H1N1 shot.

I give no one credit. You phrased your post as something you believed, I take it as presented. This may be a personal failing of mine. If you're now saying that those points which you presented are merely the shouting points of vaccine decriers, and not your own personal views, than I accept this, and humbly submit that the phrasing of my post be taken to be directed towards such individuals instead of yourself.

                            Thanks...

Imagine a piano on your chest and an elephant trying to play said piano. The worst part for me was I was unable to breathe and even going up the stairs for juice left me tired enough to take a nap on the couch.
