White Girl Wins Homecoming Queen...At Historical Black College

First noticed this on ebaumsworld where they have the news clip of it.

Summary: White girl wins title of homecoming queen at historical black college. Cries of racism ensues. Sore losers, maybe, but pick something valid. As far as I know most colleges pick homecoming king and queen on voting by the student body. So just to get into the top 10, that many people in the student body voted for her. So why the hell are they complaining of racism when they were the ones who got her there in the first place?

She then wrote to Obama asking if he could come to the school to talk about diversity and the student body freaked out even more, saying this was more racism against the black students. Why? Because she's the white minority and you gave her crap for being white? Right...

I hate when people fight for inequalities.

The first/last comment on that page seems to be incredibly relevant - presuming all that was mentioned was correct - didn't live on campus (as opposed to the many that do - arguable), had only just joined the university (ie, wasn't really a 4th year, but a 1st or 2nd year student - potentially arguable), very few had admitted to knowing her (if it, perhaps very relevant), and from a small campus instead of the major one (arguable point).

But, as GD said - they voted for her... perhaps the judging committee needs to make a bit louder the explanation for why she was voted #1??

If, as was mentioned, she wrote to Obama after only TWO DAYS, yes, I think it's premature... (if the letter was actually about any form of 'racism' directed against her..)

Without further knowledge, this probably means little... However, if it was anything like my High School's homecoming queen, she had to be voted in by the students. So, I don't see how it is possibly racist for a white girl to be homecoming queen at a traditionally black school, since, well, the black kids who are the majority, must have voted for her!

Ok, so she was picked by a panel of judges at the pageant itself.

Either way, don't see how this is racist. Would there be such a public outcry of racism if a black girl won against all white girls? I mean, really? Why are we talking about this?

so, yea...where's the racism? The only racism I see are from those that are complaining.

I wish everyone would stop finding racism in places it doesn't exist. Things like this have left me completely jaded.

Seriously, this is something that gets on my wick. There is a lot of race hate from blacks against whites, and I'm sick and tired of people pretending it doesn't exist. Everyone can be racist, whether they're black, white or bloody rainbow coloured. -.-

Another thing that bothers me: calling it reverse racism. Is there a forward racism? No? Then there can't be a reverse racism. Racism is racism.

I mean no offense by this, but really, if we want to end racism all together, wouldn't it be a better idea to just have all-inclusive schools instead of ones that are catered predominantly to a certain race?

I'd agree with that; especially, since if there was a "whites only" school, everyone would scream racism, but apparently blacks only schools are just fine.

There's no United Caucasian College Fund (and by the way, isn't Negro supposed to be a no no word? Oh I forgot, black people can call another whatever they want)....

There's all these scholarships for non-white people. Yeah, like every white child is from a rich Yuppie family and doesn't need any help going to school because white skin = rich family.

the united negro college fund does not grant scholarships solely to nonwhite students. any student of any race is eligible, provided that they attend a historically black university. we have one such university in my city, and i know several white students attending on uncc scholarships.

"Black only schools" arent schools where they only accept blacks, but rather colleges started as a means for AA's to be able to get into A college and be accepted more than they would @ say Harvard for instance. Feel free to apply to one regardless of what color you are.

Its easy to be up in arms about "blacks only colleges" and the United Negro College fund, but people seem to forget there was a time when things like this were NECESSARY for a person of african american descent to be able to succeed in this country. Even if you feel they arent necessary anymore, they were started for a reason.

That being said, I always wondered what the public response would be if there were a "White Entertainment Television" started on TV, as there is a Black Entertainment Television (BET) on TV now.

Well, in response to the idea that white students should feel free to apply to "traditionally" black colleges...I think from the news story presented that we can see WHY this doesn't happen often.
