  • Time Magazine Calls the 00s the "Decade From Hell"

Well, something like that, anyway. This was talked about on some cable news program a few days ago, and I just today thought to look it up online. To my knowledge, no one has posted it here, yet (I did a search and nothing came up).

There's the article. Basically, it is believed that this decade will be remembered as a very tumultuous decade, considering the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, the 9/11 attacks, Hurricane Katrina, the anthrax scare, and a host of other things.

So, what do you all think of this? Looking back, I guess this has been a pretty stormy ten years. Then again, I was born in 1982, so I don't have a whole lot of other decades to compare it to (not from memory, anyway).

Maybe it's just me, but a lot of the small things were either over-broadcaster small problems (like, kid on west coast buys drugs! listen in Virginians!) or super overblown stuff, as in, say, the obesity epidemic.

Unless I'm very much mistaken, most decades have had their fare share of crazy shit and warfare. Although I'll agree that this is the decade in which our leaders were able to get us into a justified war and not-nearly-as justified war at the same time. At least they haven't gotten cold feet and summarily pulled out...

I, for one am enjoying this decade's progress with non-lethal weaponry and devices for ERT/SWAT teams. Seriously cool and beneficial stuff in the pipes. But that's really just me.

On a more serious note, are they really saying it's more hellish than previous decades? I think WW2 makes this stuff look like a skinned knee epidemic.

Over what period of time? Whose lifetime? I am assuming then they aren't including the Great Depression then?

I considered that as well when I first heard about this. In this past decade, we had more advanced communications technology than we had in previous decades. We had the internet and cable news networks, and because of these two things, people often hear about things that they probably wouldn't have heard about in the days before these two things were prevalent. Take, for example, the DC Sniper story (talked about in the TIME article). I wonder if that would have been such a well-known story if it had happened back in 1965.

Edited for my amusement! Like every other decade, there was a good share of tumultuous events as well as the good. We've had so many technological advances and the first black man was elected as president of the United States of America. Not only that, but we took out a cold-blooded psychotic dictator (not to mention his equally evil sons). I still don't see how this was a hellish decade.
