Its the holiday season, and as ususal our job is pushing for donations towards the salvation army. Managers and assisstant managers get incredible prizes if we sale $300 and up. (We have to beat everyone though, just one prize, 300 is the minimal though). So we kinda push it.
How I do it is ring everything up. If they pay cash, I hit the till and as I'm giving the change back ask if they want to donate a dollar. I feel like it makes it so they don't think I'm holding their money hostage. If they say no, whoppie deal, I don't care. I'm broke too, everyone needs money. If they pay with a card, I ask before I scan the card so I only have to run it once. Same deal, ask if they want it, if they say no, no big deal.
This year there is a little extra. If someone donates FIVE dollars, they will get a FREE TWO dollar gift card for any of our stores. They can even use it right then, and are technically only paying 3 bucks.
I had ALOT of people say no. I don't care. I had a few people that said yes. That is good. I still treat them all equally.
However, I had quite a few assholes about it. They scream at me. Like I'm trying to steal their money, or guilt their money. That they won't shop at a store where the clerk will give them a stink eye if they don't donate. Or that I'm lying and secretly pocketing the money it self. I got that one a few times. Not only do I have much higher morals then that, but I do know how to steal from their credit/debit cards if I wanted too. (Not that I will. Corporate taught us all the tricks so we can watch out for employees stealing). So I don't need to worry about a dollar.
What the heck is wrong with people? It was a simple question. I'm not going to care if you do or not. Say yes. Say no. Just don't be fucking wierd about it and pissed off at me.
