The Paladin mentality. Also known as the Golden Boy Paradox.
The theory goes as such. The person who always does the "right thing" never breaks the rules always does what authority wants walks the straight and narrow etc is a good person. This is someone who sees the world in black and white with no in betweens.
Most people would refer to this person as incorruptible.
I disagree they are the greatest potential for evil ever.
Their rules say that a behavior, action, attitude is bad they will commit great evils that are not against the rules in order to punish or banish the "evil" from their lives.
Gay sons made homeless by "Good people" who are ridding themselves of the plague in their midst. Is an example. They feel their action was good as per their paladin rules homosexuality is a great evil and banishing it is not.
My counter argument would be that the "Bad Boy" the brooder the person who has seen the darkside and walks the line of good and evil is truly the good person. He knows what true evil is capable of and does not choose it. He is self aware and knows his actions to be good.
Willful ignorance combined with intolerance. It's one thing to be unaware and take steps to educate yourself. It is quite another to bury your head in the sand and pretend that there isn't a need for change.
Being inflexible and unable to sympathize with your fellow beings makes you 100% rotten in my opinion.
I've been arguing with people on the internet all day who suffer from a combination of these things. By standard definition, they are probably somewhat decent people...as long as you aren't of the type they disapprove of. Then, fuck you for your immorality.
gah. My brain hurts.

I decided a very long time ago I would rather be an immoral bastard that does the right thing than a self righteous moralist who wrote off people for being human.
Probably not the *greatest* evil, but certainly a candidate worthy of a better description than I'm going to give: the near-universal assumption that if someone disagrees with you on one issue they're less human, evil, not worth associating with, etc., regardless of what their other views and actual behavior are.

Violence has resolved more conflicts than anything else. The contrary opinion that violence doesn't solve anything is merely wishful thinking at its worst. - Starship Troopers
Honestly, I think humans are the greatest evil. Why? Think about what human beings are willing to do to each other over tiny differences. Humans do things for sport, rather than for survival.
Killing:
While this is a survival technique, it is not so much needed in today's world. Animals kill because they must. People kill because it's fun. This is NOT including self defense killings. How many murders are actually in self defense?
Torture:
You sure as hell don't see this as survival. This is more for the perpetrator's fun than anything else.
Rape:
This is more about feeling powerful. Again, not used in self defense or survival.
Other examples would be slavery, the Holocaust, genocide, war, destruction of nature, etc. The list goes on and on.
Now, say the world was solely populated by animals, as they currently are now. Just take humans out of the picture. Would these things (besides killing because that's how wild animals survive) be around? I bet not.
"It's after Jeopardy, so it is my bed time."- Me when someone made a joke about how "old" I am.
I think the greatest evil is ourselves. *the colloquial ourselves* That there is only one true right and it is the one that we hold true and that we think everyone should hold true.
The fact that we will kill anyone that doesn't agree with us or that anyone not like us is something to be feared, shunned and even destroyed. It has been our legacy all throughout history. The people that commit horrendous crimes against people for not believing as they do or not fitting their societies or cultural norms.
You can be against abortion that is your right but you don't have the right to take a persons life because they are for abortion.
You can be anti-gay or pro-gay movement.. both are valid views. (no one is going to like everyone all the time) But you do not have the right to harass, abuse, or terrorize one group or another. My dad made a good point once, he has no problem with gay, straight, bi or what have you... he has a problem being told that he is a bad man if he doesn't like them.
We are a doomed species.. not do to some giant meteor, not because 2012, but because the greatest evil is us. Every human deserves to be happy, and follow what ever deity or belief system that they have etc. What they don't deserve is to be abused because they are different. And no one has the right to say only one path is right... that goes against nature and humanity... we are diverse and we should celebrate that.. not destroy it...
*this rant brought to you by the letter V(icodine) and L(lack of sleep)* I hope that made sense....
As others have said, our attention is on what *I* think, what *I* want, what *I* feel and believe and need and all that crap...
People are not interested in other people - except as a way to benefit themselves. *I* am the only person that's important - everyone else that doesn't fit into my framework can go stuff themselves. If you don't like me, then you are wrong, and an idiot. If you don't agree with me, you are a fool. If you don't respect me, then I have no respect for you and can walk all over you and your attitudes, your beliefs, your whole life...
If you aren't of any use to me, then you are not worthy of existence.
I AM YOUR GOD!
ZOE: Preacher, don't the Bible got some pretty specific things to say about killing?
SHEPHERD BOOK: Quite specific. It is, however, Somewhat fuzzier on the subject of kneecaps.
