Personally, I don't have a problem with cell phones even though I don't own one. I do have a problem when people don't use manners when talking on their cell phone.

For example, let's say you're at a dance and your cell phone rings. The polite thing to is excuse yourself if need be and step outside the room to answer the call. The rude thing to do is have your conversation where others can hear you. It's even worse when the conversation involves stuff that shouldn't be mentioned around food and/or children.

Personally, I've never found it rude for someone to use their cell phone at a restaurant (for example), as long as the conversation is kept at a reasonmable volume and their dinner companions don't mind (or they're dining alone).

There's no difference between overhearing pieces of a regular conversation and overhearing pieces of a cell phone conversation, in my mind.

The problem is that "reasonable volume" thing. For some reason, people shout when on their cells. There's no excuse for it anymore; cell coverage is now excellent in most urban areas.

I'm just tired of being anywhere...and having some rude idiot interrupt my shopping trip/lunch/etc. I don't care what disease you're currently suffering from, I don't care who you're "doing" after work, nor do I care about what your kid has thrown up this morning. I mean really, do I go around telling *you* what color phlegm I hacked up this morning?

When that happens to me, I have to excuse myself anyway, so I can hear the call. How people do it in MOVIES for God's sake, I'll never know.

I don't really mind it, either. What I can't stand is texting/calling in the theatre or cinema. So irritating! Unless you're an ER doctor on call, nothing is so important that it can't wait an hour. Turn the blasted thing off. Vibrate is not off. Silent isn't even off...on some networks, cell phone signals can really screw with wireless microphones and the headsets that crew members use to communicate with each other.

I agree. I keep my volume at a normal conversational level. Banning my cell phone speaking to my mind would be like banning me talking to my friend on the bus.

Neither situation do I discuss sensitive subjects and I rebuke my friends when they swear.

Same here. If it is at an reasonable volume, then it is alright. But in the theater, I do not want to see a light coming from a small screen. Also I do not want to hear tapping of the keyboard.

Floridian drivers in the rain and (most) cell phone users have one common ground...they forget what they're supposed do in those situation and just plain don't know how to act.

Honestly I don't mind it when people use their cell phones, as long as the conversation isn't something that you'd want others to overhear. If you have to discuss the medicines you're taking for your <type of disease>, be discrete about it and don't shout disgusting bits of information to the rest of the world. We don't want to hear it.

Also don't use your cell phone in the bathroom, I've been yelled at by several people washing their hands at the sink after I've flushed that they're on the phone. I've flushed again several times to get the point across that, hey, the bathroom isn't the most ideal place to hold a conversation on the phone.

My mom called me from a bathroom once I hung up on her and didn't answer my phone again until it was clear she wouldn't still be there then told her why I hung up on her.

Calling me from a bathroom is like answering the phone while having sex. It's gross I don't want to hear you doing that so call me or answer the phone later.

And examples like this is why I hate cell phones. They are designed to be used anywhere, but that apparently means that they should be used EVERYWHERE. And they are, at the expense of other people. Watching a movie in the theater or dining out in public? No, problem, I'll just talk at a volume where EVERYONE can hear me over the movie/their own discussions. The people using them feels like the only one they are bothering is themselves, but if someone distracts them, that person is rude and disrespectful. RAAHHH!!

In the men's room, I've seen guys talking on the phone while standing at the urinals. Evidently we need to constantly be in direct communication with everyone at all times.

Overall, I don't get that annoyed at people using cell phones in public. My dad is sometimes a little irritating with cell phones because ever since he started using them, he'll leave home and think he has to call the house to report the most trivial things. Like a pothole at the end of the road. A traffic light being out. The fact that he passed the mailman on the way to wherever he was going.

I never understood why that was considered "rude" either. If it's somewhere where you shouldn't be talking at all, like a movie theater, then I agree. But why is it OK to talk at a restaurant to someone who's right there, but not on the phone.

Now, if they're talking loudly, then I agree, but having conversation with someone who's right there is also annoying.
