People who don't take work seriously

I have noticed in my field and don't know if it is restricted to such but people seem to think they are still in high school and that the work they do is unimportant. The things I see are as follows...

- Goofing off in training when supposed to be paying attention

- Walking around when your supposed to be on the phones taking calls

- Being belligerent to the boss when s/he is trying to coach you on something

I don't get what this attitude is that people seem to have about their place of work. I understand we make less money than a college grad. That doesn't make our job any less serious or less important.

Anyone else noticing the trend to act like a child at work?

If you accept a position and the corresponding wages, and are informed of the requirements and policies ahead of time, you are obliged to do the work to the best of your ability.

If you don't think you're getting paid enough, ask for a raise or quit. If you don't like the job, ask for a change of position or quit. But it's irresponsible to agree to do a certain job for x amount of compensation and then just phone it in.

I was always goofing off, making jokes, acting up, even tweaking my boss' nose! But then, I was in training to be a clown...

(ok, no I wasn't - it was just the first thing that came to mind...)

I think you can do both.. if you're good! If you're not, then I totally take things the way Boozy described. Which is what I would have said to my team if I'd been made a team leader (they wouldn't... I buck too much... I don't give management what they want to hear, but what they need to hear).

Now, I goof around, play jokes, laugh, have fun... and actually teach the kids something! If it's a fun place to learn, then they will want to come, and will want to learn! Much better than just being strict and uptight all the time!

When I say goofing off I mean your supposed to be doing a task or actually listening to the person training you so you don't fuck up your job and cost the company money. Goofing off in this context is doing anything but.

Having fun is fine. Having fun at the expense of your job is not.

Part of my team is in another state, and they always goof off and slack, there is no one keeping an eye on them. So, when there is only about 1-2hrs left in MY day....they realize, opps, we forgot to work.

Then they grab the easy tasks, leaving the harder stuff to the peeps in my state.

I finally got pissed off when they decided to not help me when I was buried in work...so I ignore their pleas for help until BossMan says I must help.

If they can't get their numbers in, eff them. They can be replaced.
