  • Strange Question Asked by a Local News Anchor

In the mornings, I usually turn on the local news and watch it while I lie in bed and gradually adapt to a state of wakefulness. This morning, one of the anchors was at a diner here in the city taking an casual poll from the customers about what they thought of Obama's state of the union speech, what they thought his primary focuses should be in 2010, whether they believed he'd do what he is saying he's going to do, and so on. Now, I know that people tend to like to pick on newscasters, and I hate to jump on the bandwagon, but this anchor said something during this whole thing that, to me, seemed off-the-wall and, to be perfectly honest, quite stupid.

After talking briefly into the camera about what customers in the diner had told her so far, she turns to one of the customers to interview him. She puts the microphone into the guy's face and asks him, "So, how important do you think it is for people to have jobs during these times?"

What now? Is it ever not important for people to be working? Is there ever a time when it's logical to say, "Gee, I think we really do need a higher unemployment rate and a smaller labor force."

Am I being an overly critical ass, or does anyone else think this was a crazy question?

Just to give her the benefit of the doubt, I'm wondering if this was her own way of asking the guy if he thought Obama needed to do more to boost job creation. As indicated above, this was pretty early in the morning, and I wasn't totally awake at the moment. However, the way I worded her question in this post is almost exactly the way she worded it. That much I know.

Perhaps she could have phrased her question better.

"Well, Ms. Newscaster, I do think the entry requirements for reporters should be increased. There are far too many morons getting jobs on TV asking stupid questions these days...".

Granted, it could be taken a different way (if the interviewee had time to seriously think about it)... there are many different aspects of government - is jobs the most important facet at this moment in time? Should people concentrate on employment rather than, say, environment?
ZOE: Preacher, don't the Bible got some pretty specific things to say about killing?

SHEPHERD BOOK: Quite specific. It is, however, Somewhat fuzzier on the subject of kneecaps.

Bad question, and I can think of two reasons why that question was asked.

Either they were fishing for the responses they wanted so they could make their own conclusions / reports or it was just very poorly worded.

I think we're just looking at a poorly worded question. It sounds like it was live TV; I'm sure she would have re-phrased if it had been a taped piece or a more formal interview.

*nods* I vote poorly worded question. Could have been trying to trick an answer she wanted out but only if it wasn't live.
