    Yea, I would in fact.

Honestly, I don't give a damn what doctors/nurses/PAs/GPs/etc do on their free time but I would expect them to adhere to basic courtesy and not smoke/drink alcohol when their working. Not everyone is going to care one way or the other but, like I mentioned in my previous post, others will be allergic to said smoke or even to the smell of alcohol. Or a nurse will get a patient who will throw a fit that their nurse smells like cigarette smoke and go on a complaining rampage about it.

Not everyone is going to want a doctor, nurse, or whoever that smells like they had four cigarette's take their blood or be in the room with them, either -- some may not care one way or the other, but there may be one or two or a dozen patients that wants a new doctor or nurse because they don't want to smell the cigarette smoke on the person who's supposed to be taking care of them.

I work with co-workers who smoke, one former co-worker who had three cigarette's every twenty minutes -- most of my current co-workers have the common courtesy to smoke on their breaks and not smell like they just smoked a full pack. The one former co-worker I mentioned above smelled awful just from the nicotine on her clothing, I'm surprised no customers complained about it.

( side note: I work with someone who is allergic to alcohol, she can't go to any restaurants that sell alcohol because even smelling it causes her to break out into a sweat and she gets red in the face. I don't know what cigarette smoke does to her or if she's allergic to it, but I assume that if she were she wouldn't be able to work in retail for long )

My biggest issue would be getting lectured about my health by a smoking or in other way unhealthy doctor.

I agree with everything you just said. And actually, since they did start the smoking ban @ the hospital (which was about 2 yrs ago), the smokey smell is few and far between. They only people I smell now are the visitors and the patients who are just coming in...and this one anesthesiologist, but he stank anyways. He also looks like Albert Einstein....

As for other posters, I agree that if they pick on smoking they should pick on everything else. (Over or under) Weight, medications (psychchiatric or otherwise) diabetics (Type II mostly I guess)..all of them should then also be put under the microscope. But with smokers NOT being a protected class, thats a hard battle to fight. They can do that b/c no one can legally cry "discrimination."

Please dont say that smoking does nothing to people (even if it is your personal experience) and that studies have probably been made up proving otherwise. It weakens any argument made by smokers when the smokers themselves, refuse to see the truth.
I do not have an issue with smoking at all...ive been known to partake socially, but please know there ARE repercussions.
Never said there weren't repercussions. I just disagree with the argument that smoking causes people to get sick more often and longer than others. I and several of my family, have yet to experience or see that.
I know there are dangers, and repercussions, not saying there isn't.
But, as others have pointed out, there are dangers and repercussions to other unhealthy activities as well. Why target smokers?
Or is this one of those divide and conquer methods of attack?
First - Smokers. Second - Obese. Third - drinkers. Fourth - promiscious. Fifth - unibrows ( trying to put some humour in here, it was getting too serious...)
Hell, keep that up and there'll be no one left...

Gotta say, and I know it's unfair of me to say, but I wish that smokers would be banned in more places.

In one of my classes there's a smoker that regularly sits next to me. So not only does she come in from sucking probably 1-2 cancer sticks on break, she tries to cover it up with fruity gum. IT DOES NOT WORK!!!!!! IT *SO* does NOT work!!!
By the end of class, my head his in a vice and I'm ready to chuck anything I've eaten for the past week.

I wish they'd just stop making the stupid things all together.

I'd like to ban people who don't wash and try to cover it up with perfume. However, I understand that it's not going to happen any time soon, just cuz I have that opinion.

I'm a smoker; however, I'm reasonable and I do try to be considerate. However, I draw the line at being treated by a leper by rude and oversensitive people, especially when there's other things that you can put into your body that are far worse... like alcohol, for example.

Cigarettes do not, to my knowledge, cause people to go out starting fights or sleeping around. Alcohol does.

Alcohol abuse does. Most drinkers do not abuse alcohol.

Alcohol, in moderation, is actually quite good for you.

I have my own opinions about the health risks of cigarettes vs. other stuff, but there's something I don't understand about the hospital.

I figure most people there work a 12 hour shift, right? I have no idea how much they get paid, lets say 10$ an hour, cuz its an easy number to work with. So if I work at this hospital, for $120 I will do what you want. I'll dress the way you want, I'll behave the way you want, within reason, and I'l do what you want, for those 12 hours. So if that hospital wants to make me not smoke during those 12 hours, well that's ok. It sucks for me, but they're paying me. They are buying my non-smokingness.

So who's paying me after I clock out? How am I being compensated for not smoking then? Where's my paycheck for the other 12 hours, even though I wasn't at work I was still behaving in a way that the hospital wants and I should be paid for it.

I agree....I never believed in letting a job dictate what I do on my own time. I can do whatever legal activity I want...date who I want etc. It's not their business.

I think it's obvious I was referring to drinking tons; it's not like Aunty Flo has a glass of sherry and straight away starts hammering people with her handbag. However, a lot of people who drink to excess might.

Also, off topic, but I couldn't help but laugh at the irony of someone called Boozy defending alcohol. XD

Certain alcohols in moderation are good for you, but most are nothing but empty calories and carbs that (especially if you're dieting) will do nothing but make it harder.

Beer is awful. Sure, it's made of barley and wheats, and MGD may have one with only 64 calories, but there's more carbs in that beer than in some pastas that I eat. It's like a meal in itself.

Getting cancer just affects me. It's not illegal. A hundred other people don't suffer as victims because I got cancer. Alcohol does not affect just me and many of the results are illegal. Fighting, assault, harassment, DUI, public intoxication, etc......
