  • "You're wasting away!!"

Just to go with the obesity thread. (sorry if this was been posed already, mods, feel free flog me) And I wanna continue my rant from CS.

I lost weight. 20 pounds in 1 year. I am not "wasting away." I am not "disappearing." Just because I stopped wearing my larger clothes (I can't afford a whole new wardrobe) for 1 day does not mean I am instantly a scarecrow.

yes, I am eating salad for lunch...do you also see that bag of chips?? Bite me.

Leave people and their weights alone...if they want to change and need encouragement, do so. But leave the snide remarks to yourselves, mkay?

(This following rant is direct to my coworkers, noone here)

    HIIIISSSSSSSS.

My brother was once pretty hefty. Around 320lbs or so. He started losing weight, and pretty quickly (he lost about 100lbs over the course of a bit over a year.) His managers (yeah, more than one) at work cornered him one day and demanded to know if he was sick, why he was losing so much weight, if he had health issues that they needed to know about, etc. I don't think they believed him at first when he told them he was just trying to lose weight for the sake of losing weight. They were convinced there was something else behind it, like he had cancer or something and he was going to drop dead any minute.

I can understand asking about a large, rapid weight loss like 100 pounds in a year, just to make sure he's OK, but after being told it's deliberate, or for smaller amounts, I hear there's a new invention called "minding your own business" that comes in handy...

I used to get these remarks when I was a teenager, but it's been a long time since anyone has told me that I was too skinny or was wasting away. When I was in my very early twenties, I put on a little bit of weight. Then I lost it. I gained some of it back when I was about twenty-four, but soon thereafter I started exercising and seriously monitoring what I ate, and the weight came off. Still, no one tells me I'm wasting away.

I've gotten comments like this and they made me happy since being skinny is a good thing. Alot of people on this board seem really sensitive. Should people mind their own business, yes, should people never give others positive comments, of course not. If somebody compliments you be happy about it even if its a tad nosy.

No one's said I'm wasting away yet (I lost 65 lbs last year), but then again, I've shared my goals with friends, family, and coworkers, so they know what's up. I've gotten lots of positive comments and support from them.

I was reading a blog today where the author mentioned how people skinnier than she was said she was too skinny. She theorized that they were afraid that she was becoming the new "skinny hot chick" and felt threatened.

I used to know a girl at school who was one of my few friends; she had a medical problem which meant that she was really skinny and had always to snack during the day. People would accuse her of having anorexia and it made me so mad. I mean, this girl would eat TONS at lunch; she wasn't anorexic, just suffering from a medical problem.

I think it was something to do with her thyroid and she had to take medication.

A friend of mine used to be like that. Until she got pregnant, and found out she had a tumor on her thyroid, which was causing it to rev up to a point where she never ever gained weight (and a size 0 was too big for her). After the tumor/thyroid were removed, she gained weight (not a lot, but her body went to the weight it should have been at all a long).

And a slow thyroid does the exact opposite - it makes you gain weight. Another friend of mine had that happen to a point that her thyroid completely stopped working and had to have it removed. She's on medication, but she's heavier than she'd like, but it's because of her thyroid problem.

                        ive always been uh...thin?

i used to weigh more back in high school than i do now. then i was at 120 ish lbs.

then for a while i was at 117

then about 2 years ago i went down to 110. and have been there since. (im 5'6" if anyone wants to know)

i personally dont like people commenting on my weight, always saying, "how can you eat that and stay so skinny"

you know what? idk how i can. i think ever since i lost the weight (i honestly was not trying to lose any) ive felt like crap all the time. something always feels bad or something hurts, or i dont have a lot of energy.

yes of course i could eat more, but its not always easy. kinda like asking someone whos over weight to start eating less i suppose?

a few months ago i had some bloodwork done (due to a panic attack) and they said i may possibly have an UNDER active thyroid.

                        ok...

i need to have it worked again in march, oh joy.
