  • Tip no less than 10% at a restaurant...even for terrible service

    So says this article...

    http://customsites.yahoo.com/financi...h?ywaad=ad0035

I also don't agree with food retailer tipping in general as I think most folks that work in a mall food court are at least making minimum wage.

If the food isn't being brought to me why should I tip anything? I wasn't aware that turning around and picking something up from the warming light was a tip worthy service.

I have a hunch that tip jars were put into coffee places and the like so that the owner/operators had an excuse to pay their workers less.

As for always tipping wait staff 10% no matter what, bullshit. I am an awesome tipper, I like to think. If you provide even basic service, you're liable to get at least 25% from me, more if I have more cash on me. But if you're a shitty waiter/-tress, and I am sure the problem is you (I don't tip bad if the food itself is lousy, that's the cook's fault), you shall suffer my wrath. I don't ever not tip, because then they might think I may have forgotten. I'll leave you a nice, shiny quarter.

Fortunately for me, I've been able to figure out where I get awesome service and there's more than enough variety. Usually it's between 15%-20%, more if it's the super-awesome waiter/ -tress

LOL People think you should tip gas station attendants? Silly out of staters.

If I have such terrible service that I think they deserve less than 15%, not only don't I tip, but I talk to a manager about why. I'm lucky where I live, the serving jobs are so competitive that anything less than wonderful service gets you replaced pretty damn quick.

I think if waitresses and waiters get tipped, all service jobs should be tipped.

I don't see how running around with orders and such is that much harder than the stuff I did and dealt with working for a department type store (Zellers) I know it would have been nice to get tipped after having run around the toy section climbing to the top shelves and getting down heavy items for customers, only to have to put it back after.

Though here in Canada waiters and waitresses are paid at least minimum wage if not more. Hell my cousin worked for a steakhouse and made $12 an hour plus tips, more than I've ever made, even as a blackjack dealer. Sorry if I know you're being paid for doing your job, why should I give extra? (though I do, out of obligation, but I'm certainly not a huge tipper 10 -20% at the most, 20 is only for super excellent service.)

And when I worked for the gas station I had to run around getting items for people when our doors were locked for graveyards. Especially since I usually had to list off stuff we had, because they couldn't see everything. I never expected tips of course, because of the nature of my job, but I don't think Wait-staff should expect them either, with the exception of places that pay based on tips, tips are extra money.

Fast food and coffee shops, well, I have no problem with Tip jars. I just don't want to be obligated to tip.

              {as a disclaimer, I do tip, generally 10%, and only because I like to go back to places without having a bad reputation for not tipping, which is stupid BTW}

*ahem* sorry, hot button issue for me.

The article made me boggle. "Tipping authorities" was mentioned at least once.

There's an authority on tipping? A formal one or self-appointed? For something that's voluntary?

                Staggering.

It seems that any slight amount of alleged 'expertise' in any given area makes you 'an authority'.

Which is scary because that makes everyone in BATFE (ATF) a firearms 'authority'

And since I happen to know more about firearms than them, I'm worried about exactly what effect their having on national security...

The better the service the better the tip. I do tip at the coffee bars I go because they are small and locally owned. Often the wages are not very high in local coffee bars.

I try to tip between 20%-25% for good service. I might not tip at all if the service is bad. If I have to go pickup my food then I don't tip.

I do want to know who these "Tipping Authorities" are. I would like to have a discussion with them about the definition of "service". There's is apparently off a little bit.

Occasionally waiters and other customer service types will go above and beyond for their customers, I've done it myself many times. These particular instances should be reason for some servers to earn themselves a good tip.

The thing is we've established a protocol whereby a 15% tip is to be expected for standard service.

I know it said you aren't supposed to tip gas station attendants. But the fact that they had to post that meant there are people who actually wondered if you are supposed to tip them.

If you're at a full service station where they wash you windows, check your tires, various other things I don't know if gas station attendants actually do anymore, then I would say they are more deserving then a person who carries food from the kitchen to your table.

I usually tip for service. Unless, it was terrible. At coffee shops, if I use cash then I will give about a 50% tip. Well that is for the $2.00 coffee. Then with refills being 50 cents.

Aye, some people are too expecting of tips. Sure, I'll tip you a good one for mixing me that complicated fruit-booze drink, but for having to take 2 steps, open a fridge and grab a beer for me? I'll probably order a round for my group and leave you a buck.

Of course, for most restaurant jobs, the last time I checked anyway, they only get paid like 3 dollars an hour. If the restaurant had to pay them 7.50 an hour then your meal would cost $12 instead of $8, so you wouldn't really be saving any money by not tipping, but your service will probably go waaaay down because your waiter/tress doesn't make anything extra regardless of if they go the extra mile for you or not.
